A sauna heater is rated for a room volume, not a person count. Harvia publishes that volume — its 6 kW Topclass and KIP are both rated for 177 to 283 cubic feet — and that single published range solves the entire selection problem for a Harvia. Most other brands publish a person count or the word "medium", which solves nothing.
Work out your room's volume in cubic feet (length × width × height), then pick a heater whose published range contains it. Two adjustments matter: an uninsulated room needs more heater than the rating suggests, and so does a room with a large glass panel or an uninsulated door. Electric heaters are instant, controllable and need a 240 V circuit. Wood stoves need no electricity at all, take 45 minutes, and produce a heat most enthusiasts prefer. Wood stoves are rated by electric equivalence — a stove described as 9–15 kW equivalent is being compared to an electric heater, which is the only comparison that means anything.
Two specs separate a wood stove that lasts from one that does not: the steel grade and the stone capacity. 304 stainless is the correct grade for a wet, hot outdoor environment. A published stone capacity in pounds tells you how much thermal mass you are buying, and therefore how the heat behaves after the fire dies down. Both are covered in electric vs wood-burning heaters.
Sauna stones crack and crumble with thermal cycling, and when they do they restrict airflow through the heater, which makes the elements run hotter and shortens their life. They are meant to be inspected and replaced periodically. Most owners never do it and then wonder why the heater failed early.
