The best sauna signs

Cheap, giftable and almost always hung in the wrong place. Printed wood belongs outside the hot room; metal survives a damp changing area; and two of these signs actually do a job.

By Sawyer V.Last updated
Two-Sided Sauna Available / In Use Wood Sign, 12 x 6 in

The verdict: buy the two-sided Available / In Use sign. It is the only one on this page that does a job rather than decorating: flip it and the household knows whether the cabin is occupied, which is the actual daily friction in a shared sauna. If the sign is going on a damp changing-room wall, buy metal — the MOSM aluminum sign states rust and corrosion resistance and the Sauna Rules tin sign adds etiquette for guests. If the sauna is communal, the Please Shower Before Entering board says the thing nobody wants to say out loud. And none of these belongs inside the hot room: every one of them is printed wood or thin metal with no published temperature rating.

The mistake everyone makes: hanging it inside

A sauna interior runs at 175 to 195 degrees F with humidity that swings with every water pour. Printed wood in that environment fades, lifts and eventually warps, and the ink and any coating are a film that heats with the room — the same argument we make against coated wood in sauna cleaners and wood oils and sauna towel racks. Not one of the nine sauna signs we looked at publishes a temperature rating, and two of them say in their own listings to avoid humid placement. So hang the sign where people read it anyway: the outside of the door, the changing area, or the mudroom wall between the plunge and the house. The inside of the cabin should be bare wood, the heater guard, and a thermometer.

A sign that communicates beats a sign that decorates

Three of these six say something operational. Occupancy is the one that earns its place in any household where two people share a cabin and one of them has walked in on the other. Hygiene matters in a communal or club sauna, where rinsing before entry is a water-quality issue and not a preference. Etiquette matters when guests use the sauna and nobody wants to deliver a lecture in a towel. The other three are wall decor, which is a legitimate thing to buy — just buy it knowingly, and buy the thicker stock if it is going somewhere people look at the walls.

Who each pick is for

  • Two-sided Available / In Use — a shared sauna. Flips between two states, rope and holes included, legible at door distance. Skip it if one person uses the sauna; then it is a decoration with extra steps.
  • MOSM vintage SAUNA aluminum — a damp wall. Metal, stated rust and corrosion resistant, pre-drilled, in a long format that suits a door header. Skip it if you want wood to match a cedar interior.
  • The Sauna aluminum door plate — signage, not wall art. 12 by 3 inches, rounded corners, stated made in the USA. Skip it if you want something readable from across a yard.
  • Sauna Rules tin — guests. Etiquette on the wall in a material that handles a damp changing room, pre-drilled at all four corners. Skip it if only the people who built the sauna ever use it.
  • Please Shower Before Entering — a club or communal cabin. Large text, cheapest sign here, and the single most useful sentence in a shared sauna. Skip it for a private sauna, where it is talking to nobody.
  • Relax Refresh Renew — honest decoration. The thickest wooden stock here at 0.2 inches with polished edges. Skip it if you wanted the sign to communicate something.

Straight decoration, and honest about it. At 0.2 inches thick with polished edges it is the best-finished wooden sign here, which is what you want in a changing room where people actually look at the walls.

Published specifications
MaterialPrinted wood
Dimensions12 x 6 x 0.2 in
Thickness0.2 in, the thickest wooden sign here
EdgesPolished
ColorsWhite and brown
FormatHanging

What works

  • Thicker stock and polished edges, so it does not read as cheap
  • Neutral wording that suits any sauna
  • Thin enough to hang from a hook or lean on a shelf

What doesn't

  • Purely decorative — it does no job at all
  • Printed wood in a damp room will not last
  • No mounting hardware described

Skip it ifyou want the sign to communicate something. This one is wall decor and nothing more.

What none of them publishes

  • A temperature rating. Six for six, which is the finding that shapes this whole page.
  • Mounting hardware, on four of six. Pre-drilled holes are not screws. Two include a rope; the rest assume you have something.
  • Print durability in humidity. Two listings warn against humid placement; none says what happens if you ignore that.
  • Wood species, on all three wooden signs. 'Solid wood' and 'quality wood' is what you get, in a niche where species is the usual first question.

Questions people actually ask

Can you hang a sign inside a sauna?
We would not. A sauna interior runs at 175 to 195 degrees F with humidity swinging on every water pour, and not one sign in this category publishes a temperature rating. Hang it on the outside of the door or in the changing area.
What material should a sauna sign be?
Aluminum or tin if it is going anywhere damp — two listings here state rust, moisture and fade resistance. Printed wood is fine in a dry hallway or changing room and is the better match for a cedar interior, but it is the material that fails first in humidity.
What should a sauna sign say?
Something useful, if you have the choice. Occupancy ('Available / In Use') solves the daily friction in a shared cabin; 'Please shower before entering' solves hygiene in a communal one; a rules plate handles etiquette for guests without a conversation.
What size sauna sign do you need?
12 by 6 inches is the standard wall format and reads clearly at door distance. A 12 by 3 inch plate reads as signage on a door; a 4 by 16 inch strip suits a door header. Anything smaller is a close-up object.
Are sauna signs a good gift?
They are cheap, specific and hard to get wrong, which is a decent combination. The two-sided occupancy sign is the one a sauna owner is most likely to actually use, which makes it the better gift than a decorative plaque.
