The best upright cold plunges

Upright plunges — barrels and pods you sit in with knees bent — are the most space-efficient way to plunge. They take the smallest floor area of any tub, and because you sit upright, they cover your shoulders with far fewer gallons than a tub long enough to recline in. Fewer gallons means less ice or less chiller work, every session.

Depth is the specification

In an upright tub, what decides whether you are under the water is interior depth against your seated shoulder height — not gallons. Measure it: sit on the floor with your back straight and measure from the floor to the top of your shoulder. The tub's usable depth has to exceed that, less a little for the water you displace. Several listings publish only a capacity; the ones that publish height or dimensions let you check.

Getting in and out

The part of an upright plunge people forget is the entry. You step over a high wall into cold water and lower yourself down, then climb out wet and cold. Steps help enormously — one tub here includes them — and a stable surface around the tub matters more than it does for a low reclining tub. If mobility is a concern, a reclining tub with a low sill is the easier daily choice.

The one we would skip

The light fabric barrel — if you are tall.

It is very light, packs away, and comes with a cover and six insulation layers, which makes it a sensible entry into upright plunging. But at 31.5 inches tall externally, a tall user's shoulders will sit above the water, and soft fabric walls flex more than the rigid and drop-stitch barrels above it. Measure your seated shoulder height first; if it is close to the tub's height, choose a deeper barrel.
