Red light mat vs panel
A panel stands at a distance and lights one side of you. A mat lies against you and lights what it touches — or, as a cocoon, both sides at once. The shape decides how you use it; the output figure, if there is one, decides what it does.

The short version: choose a panel if you want to stand or sit in front of the light, cover a large area from one side, and adjust the distance. Choose a mat if you want to lie down, cover what you lie on — or, in a cocoon, front and back together — and put it away afterward. Both are sold with red and near-infrared wavelengths stated, and both rarely publish their output at a stated distance, which is the number that tells you the dose.
Side by side
| Panel | Mat | |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Standing or sitting in front of it | Lying on it, or zipped inside a cocoon |
| Coverage | One side at a time, from a distance | What it touches; a cocoon covers both sides |
| Distance | You set it — and the output changes with it | Against the skin, so distance mostly falls away |
| Heat | Light only, on the picks here | Light only, unless a warming layer is built in |
| Storage | A fixed or stand-mounted fixture | Folds or rolls away |
| Output, as published | Rarely at a stated distance | Rarely at all; one pick quotes a figure with no method |

Distance is the panel's question
A panel's output is only meaningful with the distance it was measured at, because the reading changes as you move — our irradiance explained page sets that out. Neither panel pick publishes an irradiance at a stated distance: the dual-chip full-body panel quotes an LED rating rather than a measured wall draw, and the BestQool Pro200 states 200 dual-chip LEDs across four wavelengths from 630 to 940 nm and a 330 W rating. What a panel does give you is control: step closer or further, and it covers a large area from one side while you stand. If you go that way, a stand matters — our panel stands page covers those.
Coverage is the mat's question
A mat sits against you, so the distance question mostly disappears — but the output question does not. The Quasar MD cocoon is the only mat we list that quotes a figure, 150 mW/cm², which its listing calls energy density and gives with no method. What a mat gives you is coverage without a stand: the Lunamyst is a flat 72 × 33-inch mat, and the Quasar MD zips into a 72-inch cocoon that covers front and back together and unzips into two mats. Our mat roundup compares five.
Everything else
- Time. Panels ask you to stand or sit still; mats ask you to lie down. Pick the one you will actually use.
- Heat. Some mats add a warming layer — the PEXKO on our mat page does, without stating the temperature. None of the picks here does.
- Timers and modes. The Lunamyst offers constant light and 10 Hz and 40 Hz pulsing with a 10–90-minute timer; the Quasar MD has constant and breathing modes and a 10–60-minute timer. None of the listings cites evidence for pulsing, and we make no claim for it.
- Claims. Several listings use medical language. Those are the sellers' words; our evidence page covers what has been studied, and is red light therapy worth it weighs the whole category.
Which to choose
- A panel, if you want to stand, adjust the distance and cover a large area from one side — see the best red light therapy panels.
- A mat, if you want to lie down, cover what you lie on, or use a cocoon for both sides, and store it away.
- Neither, if it is one small area — a handheld device or a wrap suits that better.

Full-Body Red Light Therapy Panel, 5 Wavelengths, 120 Dual-Chip LEDs
Generic Amazon listing
#ad Price as of Sep 27, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.
Five wavelengths across 120 dual-chip diodes, with a published wattage. Dual chip means every LED emits more than one wavelength, so coverage is even rather than striped.
| LEDs | 120, dual chip |
|---|---|
| Wavelengths | 5, per the listing |
| Power | 200 W |
| Board size | Not published in the listing |
| Stand | Not published in the listing |
| Irradiance | Not published at a stated distance |
What works
- A published wattage and LED count
- Dual-chip diodes, so both main wavelengths come from every LED
- More wavelengths than the two-wavelength boards at this size
What doesn't
- No published board dimensions
- No irradiance figure at any distance
- Extra wavelengths have a thinner research base than 660 and 850 nm
Skip it ifyou want the largest treated area per dollar. Wavelength count is not coverage.
BestQool Pro200 Red Light Therapy Panel, 4 Wavelengths
BestQool
$589.00 · 5% off
#ad Price as of Sep 27, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.
Four wavelengths instead of two, and modular so panels gang together. If you already own one panel and want a wall of them, this is the architecture that allows it.
| Wavelengths | 4, spanning 630–940 nm |
|---|---|
| LEDs | 200, dual chip |
| Rated power | 330 W |
| Design | Modular — panels link together |
| Coverage | Full body |
| Irradiance | Not published at a stated distance |
What works
- Four wavelengths covers more of the studied range than the usual two
- Modular linking is a genuine upgrade path rather than a replacement
- Long-listed model with a deep owner-report history
What doesn't
- More wavelengths is not automatically more effect — evidence outside 660/850 nm is thinner
- No irradiance figure
- Modular expansion multiplies an already significant cost
Skip it ifyou only ever want one panel. You would be paying for a modular architecture you never use.
Quasar MD Full-Body Red Light Mat, Cocoon Style, 2,052 LEDs
Quasar MD
#ad Price as of Sep 27, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.
The only mat here that states its LED package and an output figure, in a 72-inch cocoon that unzips into two separate mats.
| LEDs | 2,052, SMD 5050 package |
|---|---|
| Wavelengths | 660 nm, 850 nm |
| Format | 72-inch zippered cocoon; unzips into two mats |
| Surface | TPU membrane; 92%+ light transmission, per the listing |
| Output, as published | 150 mW/cm², called energy density in the listing; no distance or method given |
| Intensity | 5 levels |
| Modes | Constant and breathing |
| Timer | 10–60 minutes |
| Warranty, per the listing | 1 year |
What works
- Covers front and back at once
- Splits into two mats
- LED package and an output figure stated
What doesn't
- The output figure has no method or distance
- The medical-grade and pain-relief claims are the seller's
- No split between the two wavelengths stated
Skip it ifyou only need the back or legs — a flat mat is simpler.

|---|---|
| Wavelengths | 660 nm, 850 nm |
| Size | 72 × 33 in, flat |
| Surface | TPU |
| Modes | Constant, 10 Hz and 40 Hz pulse |
| Intensity | 5 levels (P1–P5) |
| Timer | 10–90 minutes, auto-off |
| Warranty, per the listing | 365 days |
| Irradiance | Not published at a stated distance |
What works
- Plain, flat and full length
- Long timer range
- No health claims in the listing
What doesn't
- Fewer LEDs than the cocoons
- No irradiance figure
- Covers one side at a time
Skip it ifyou want front and back covered together.
For a premium reference, Sun Home's red light line is a full-body panel, a desktop panel and a face mask rather than a mat, and its warranty page gives its red light devices a complete one-year warranty. Its product page for the full-body panel describes red and near-infrared LEDs but does not publish an irradiance at a stated distance either.
