The best sauna floor mats

Almost Heaven says its traditional indoor saunas are made to use your existing floor as the floor inside the sauna. On concrete — an unfinished basement or garage — it suggests laying duckboard flooring on top as a buffer against cold feet, and it sells a cedar flooring kit made to fit its Respite series and a cedar entrance mat. That is the logic of this page: wood inside the hot room, something that drains outside it.

Cedar is the natural choice: the bingaai mat is unoiled, unstained western red cedar on rubber feet, slatted so water drains through. Felt is the soft alternative — the Hahafelt mats are 43 inches long, work on the floor or the bench, and hang up to dry. Felt absorbs; cedar drains. Choose felt for comfort underfoot and wash it often; choose cedar for something that stays put.

Infrared cabins: check the floor first

Some infrared cabins heat the floor. Sun Home's Eclipse has a heated floor panel, and several Amazon cabins have foot-heating plates. Covering a heating surface is a question for the manual, so check it before you put anything on the floor. Sun Home's Solstice, which has no floor unit, asks you to keep water, harsh cleaners and abrasives off the wood.

Outside the sauna

The wet walk between sauna and plunge wants a floor that drains and grips. Interlocking rubber drainage tiles — the wiiiw pack is 18 tiles of 12 × 12 in — have an anti-slip surface, drain through holes and grooves, and roll up for cleaning. At the door itself, a small slatted mat on rubber pads, like the GOBAM bamboo, is enough. A plastic mat made to look like bamboo that came up in our duckboard search. It is waterproof and will not mold, which suits a shower. In a hot room we would rather have real wood.
