The best panoramic saunas

"Panoramic" covers three designs: a barrel with a glass end, a cabin or cube with a glass front, and a barrel with a curved window or a clear dome. All three trade some heat for the view. How much depends on the glass, the walls around it and whether the heater was chosen with the glass in mind.

Why the glass costs heat

Glass holds heat far less well than a solid timber wall, so every square foot of it is a square foot where heat leaves faster. On a cold day you feel it as a cool draft across your face and a heater that runs longer to hold temperature. That is not a reason to avoid a view. It is a reason to look for the three things that offset it:

• Thicker walls around the glass. Both Duthss cabins state roughly 2-inch cedar walls — a thick wall makes up some of what the glass gives away.
• A glass specification. The Duthss 4–8 person states about 1/3-inch insulated glass. A listing that says nothing about its glass is silent on the weakest thermal point of the whole building.
• Heater headroom. Two picks pair their glass with a Harvia 8 kW heater rather than the 6 kW common on barrels. Size the heater from its maker's rated room volume and allow for the glass — the heater sizing guide shows how.

Glass, acrylic and which way it faces

The Benovo's rear half-dome is acrylic rather than glass. Acrylic is lighter and less brittle than glass, and it also scratches more easily, so check the manufacturer's care guidance before you clean it. Whatever the material, face it at the view you actually want and away from the prevailing wind where you can: a glass end looking at a fence is heat loss for nothing.

Glass also changes where the sauna can go. A clear wall facing a neighbor's window is a privacy question as much as a thermal one, and it is easier to settle before the foundation goes in than after.

A view with no electrical run

The ZONEMEL is the odd one out: a large barrel with a half-moon window and a wood-burning stove, so it needs no 240 V circuit at all. That can make a panoramic sauna possible at the bottom of a garden where an electrical run would cost more than the building. Where premium sits

Sun Home's outdoor saunas take a different route. Its Luminar wraps a Canadian red cedar interior in an aerospace-grade aluminum exterior, and its Solaris is a thermo-alder cabin with a HUUM heater and a published 230 °F maximum. What we would not buy

A panoramic sauna whose listing says nothing about its glass — no thickness, no tempering, no insulation. On a glass-fronted building the glass is the specification that matters most, and a listing that leaves it out is leaving out the one number this page is about.
