The best cold plunge thermometers

A cold plunge thermometer is the cheapest accessory in the category and one of the more useful ones. If you follow any temperature-based protocol, you need to know the temperature of the water around you — and neither a chiller's display nor a guess at how far the ice has melted tells you that reliably.

Why the chiller's number is not enough

A chiller measures the water flowing through it. Water in the tub, especially at the far end from the return, can differ, and in an ice bath there is no display at all. What to look for

Placement

• Float it away from the chiller's return, where the coldest water enters, for a reading of the tub as a whole.
• Let it settle after you add ice or the chiller cycles.
• Take it out before you get in if it gets in the way; the reading before your session is the one that matters.
• Keep a solar sensor in daylight — indoor plunges need a battery model.
