The best wood-burning saunas

People choose wood for the ritual and then discover the actual argument for it, which is financial. An electric sauna heater above about 4.5 kW needs 240 V, and getting 240 V to the bottom of a garden means a trench, armored cable, an electrician, a breaker and — in most jurisdictions — an inspection.

That work regularly costs more than the sauna. It is the single biggest reason outdoor sauna projects stall halfway, and it is invisible on every product page you will read. What wood gives you, and what it takes

1. 1A published output figure, stated as electric equivalence. "Equivalent to a 9–15 kW electric heater" is comparable to something. "Powerful heat output" is not. We rank listings that commit to a number above those that do not.
2. 2Steel grade. 304 stainless is the grade that survives a wet-dry-freeze cycle. Where a listing states it, that is a genuine durability claim; where it says only "stainless", it is not.
3. 3Published stone capacity in pounds. Stones are the thermal battery. A stove with 55 lb of stone behaves completely differently from one with a token tray, and the figure is published far less often than it should be.
4. 4Chimney included, or named as separate. A chimney kit is not optional and it is not cheap. A listing that bundles it is quoting you a real price.
5. 5Whether you can throw water. A rock tray is what makes it a sauna rather than a hot room. Several "sauna tents" are hot tents, and we say which.

Sizing a wood stove to a room

Wood stoves are rated by electric equivalence precisely because that is the only comparable unit available, and it lets you use the same sizing arithmetic as an electric build. The rule of thumb is roughly 1 kW per 45–50 cubic feet of well-insulated room volume, which our heater sizing guide works through properly.

Two adjustments apply to wood specifically, and both push in the same direction. Outdoors, in a cold climate, you are fighting ambient through the walls the whole time, so err upward. And a wood stove's output is not a thermostat-held constant — it peaks and declines with the burn — so a stove sized exactly to the room will feel underpowered at the end of a session. Sizing up is the correct instinct here, which is the opposite of the advice for an electric heater, where over-sizing wastes a larger circuit.

The safety items that are genuinely different

A wood-fired sauna is an appliance burning fuel in a small enclosed room, and that is a materially different safety picture from an electric one. Three things matter and none are optional.

• Carbon monoxide. Any fuel-burning appliance produces it, and a sauna is a small, sealed, low-ventilation space with people in it. Fit a CO alarm. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission sets out the hazard clearly and it is worth ten minutes of reading before you light the first fire.
• Chimney clearances and a spark arrestor. The chimney passes through a wooden roof. Clearances are specified for a reason, and a spark arrestor matters a great deal if the sauna sits under trees.
• A non-combustible floor pad under the stove. Embers fall when you load a stove. Cedar floors and embers are a poor combination.
• Somewhere safe for ash. Ash stays hot for far longer than people expect. A metal container with a lid, kept off the deck, is the whole solution.

None of this is difficult and none of it is expensive. It is simply a set of steps an electric build does not have, and it belongs in the plan rather than in the first evening's improvisation.

Tents: honest about what they are

Two of our picks are tent saunas with wood stoves, and they deserve a clear framing because the category is full of overstatement.

A wood-fired tent sauna is a real sauna in the sense that matters: a stove, a chimney, dry heat, and — if it has a rock tray — steam when you throw water. That is more than most "portable saunas" deliver, since the majority of those are steam tents with a kettle, which is a different experience entirely. What a tent is not is insulated. It heats fast and loses heat fast, it is entirely at the mercy of wind, and the fabric will not last like cedar. As a way to have a genuine wood-fired sauna at a lakeshore, a campsite or a rented house for a fraction of the cost of a cabin, it is excellent value. As a permanent garden installation it is a false economy, and you should read best outdoor saunas instead.

It is the best answer here to "no electrical work at all" because it pairs a cube shape with a wood stove and asks nothing of your consumer unit. But six-to-eight person capacity is a great deal of air to heat, and if you are two people using it twice a week you will spend every session heating volume nobody is sitting in — more firewood, longer warm-up, more space given up in the garden.
