Every listing publishes wavelength and wattage. None publish irradiance at a stated distance, which is the only figure that determines dose. Here is how to choose anyway.

There is a second problem with the published numbers. The wattage on a red light listing is almost always the sum of the LED ratings, not measured draw at the wall — and neither figure tells you what reaches your skin. A panel advertised at 1,500 W does not consume 1,500 W and does not deliver it to you.

What the specs actually mean

Panels offering four wavelengths span more of the range, but more is not automatically better — the evidence outside 660 and 850 nm is thinner. A four-wavelength panel is a reasonable choice; it is not a decisive advantage.
LED count versus output per LED
Two design philosophies, and they trade off. Many small diodes — 200 or 225 LEDs — give even coverage with less hot-spotting up close, but lower output per diode. Fewer large diodes — 80 LEDs at 5 W each — concentrate output but hot-spot visibly at close range.
Neither is better in the abstract. For close-range work on a specific area, higher output per diode is useful. For standing back and covering a body, more diodes is smoother. Without irradiance figures we cannot tell you which delivers more to your skin, and we are not going to pretend we can.
Board area
The most practically useful published spec, and the one people underweight. A narrow board is a targeted tool — treat it as full-body and you are doing three positions and three timers. A full-body board covers you standing in one go.
If a listing publishes board dimensions in inches, use them. If it only says "full body", be skeptical: at 45 W across 225 LEDs, "full body" means very long sessions at very close range.
The one we would skip
The 45 W entry panel — unless you are specifically trying to find out whether you will use red light at all, which is a genuinely reasonable thing to want.

But if you already own a panel, stepping down in power is not an upgrade, and if you are buying your first serious panel this is not it.
Buying without an irradiance figure
Since nobody publishes it, here is how to reason:
- Distance is yours to control. Irradiance falls off with distance. Whatever panel you buy, moving closer increases dose — which is the one variable in your hands and the one a built-in sauna tube fixes for you.
- Ask the manufacturer. "What is the irradiance in mW/cm² at 6 inches?" is an answerable question. How a company handles it is informative even before the number arrives.
- Do not treat wattage as a proxy. It is an LED rating, not delivered power, and the relationship between the two varies by design.
- Weight board area and wavelength, which are published and are genuinely useful.
- Be skeptical of very high advertised wattages on small boards. The arithmetic rarely works.

A note on what these do
Red light therapy — photobiomodulation in the literature — has a genuine and growing research base, and it also has marketing that runs a long way ahead of it. Our position throughout this hub is that every physiological claim links to a specific source or it does not appear. Red light therapy evidence is written to that standard and is deliberately less exciting than most of what you will read elsewhere.
