The best cedar cold plunge tubs

A cedar cold plunge is a piece of furniture as much as an appliance — the tub that sits beside a sauna and looks as if it belongs there. On the four we chose, the cedar is cladding: every one states a stainless steel interior or lining, and every one comes with a chiller that heats as well as cools, to about 107 °F. What separates them is how much water they hold, what shape they are and how the chiller is packaged.

What the cedar is doing

On all four, the water sits in stainless steel and the cedar wraps the outside. That is the right way round. Cedar's case outdoors — its natural resistance to decay, which our wood comparison covers with its sources — matters for cladding that sees rain and sun. Against standing water and sanitizer, these tubs rely on steel.

Shape: lie back or stand up

Water is about 8.3 lb per gallon, so 500 to 600 liters — about 132 to 158 gallons — is roughly 1,100 to 1,300 lb of water before the tub and you. The one we would skip

A small solid-cedar soaking tub sold alongside plunges. One came up in our search: a 34-inch freestanding cedar bathtub with no chiller, whose listing gives its capacity as both 21 and 43 gallons. It is a bathtub. A plunge needs a chiller, or a tub built to take one.
