Stainless steel vs acrylic cold plunge tubs

The short version: stainless steel is the material the premium makers back with the longest tub warranties — BlueCube gives a stainless tub and frame 15 years against 10 for its aluminum ones — and they state the grade, 316. The Amazon listings we read say only "stainless steel". Acrylic is lighter and, in Polar Monkeys' flagship, fully insulated. Molded plastic is the budget integrated option. The tub material matters less than whether the chiller, sanitation and warranty behind it are published.

What the makers publish

Stainless steel: the grade is the claim

"Stainless" covers several grades. BlueCube and Polar Monkeys state 316, which both describe as marine grade, and BlueCube adds the gauge — 14 — and a Line-X weatherproof coating. Sun Home describes the Titan XL's interior as marine-grade stainless without a number. Neither stainless listing among our Amazon picks states a grade: the Duthss all-in-one says "stainless steel inner tub", the ALEKO "stainless-steel construction". Where a grade is stated, it is a checkable claim; where it is not, ask. BlueCube's warranty is the clearest signal of what a maker thinks its steel is worth: 15 years on a stainless tub and frame, 10 on aluminum.

Acrylic: lighter, and insulated when the maker says so

Polar Monkeys calls its acrylic Brainpod 2.0 its flagship, and describes it as 80 gallons of fully insulated acrylic. On Amazon, the ICEGALAX IGT-V5 is an acrylic tub with the chiller, pump, filtration and a skimmer built in, and weighs 245 lb empty against 570 lb for the stainless-lined Duthss — though the Duthss holds 500 liters to the ICEGALAX's 300. The ICEGALAX listing states a one-year warranty. Ask any acrylic maker what the shell itself is warranted for, separately from the chiller.

Aluminum and molded plastic

BlueCube's uprights use welded 5052 aluminum, insulated and powder-coated, with a 10-year tub and frame warranty. At the budget end, the Duthss one-person all-in-one uses a one-piece molded PE shell with PU insulation and a built-in 1 HP chiller — no seams and no exposed hoses, but if the chiller fails, the tub is out of service with it. What matters more than the tub

• The chiller and its range. A stainless tub with no chiller — like the wood-fired ALEKO — is only as cold as your water or ice. See the chiller sizing guide.
• Sanitation. The premium makers name ozone, UV and filtration; the Duthss all-in-one listing says only "self-cleaning water care". See the filtration guide.
• A tub warranty separate from the chiller. BlueCube splits them, and so does the Duthss listing — two years on the chiller, five on the wood structure. It is the right question to ask of any tub.
• Weight. Water is about 8.3 lb per gallon, and a stainless-lined cabinet is heavy before you fill it.

Which to choose

• Stainless steel, if you want the material premium makers back longest, with the grade stated.
• Acrylic, if you want a lighter integrated tub, and the maker states insulation and a warranty on the shell.
• Molded plastic, if budget and an integrated chiller matter most — and you accept that the tub and chiller are one unit.

Alternatives you can buy today

The picks cover the materials on Amazon: a cedar cabinet around a stainless steel tub with a built-in chiller and heater, an all-stainless wood-fired tub with no chiller, an integrated acrylic tub, and a molded-plastic all-in-one. None is a BlueCube, Polar Monkeys or Sun Home product, and neither stainless pick states a grade.
