A kit is the cheapest route to a real traditional sauna if you already have somewhere to put it. Here is what each type actually includes and what you are still buying yourself.
"Sauna kit" covers two genuinely different products and the distinction decides everything about your project.
- A room package is the lining, benches, door, heater and hardware for a sauna you build *inside a structure you already own* — a garage bay, a basement corner, a spare closet. There is no shell, because your building is the shell.
- A DIY shell kit is the whole building, delivered flat, for you to assemble outdoors. It includes the structure but usually asks you to supply the foundation and all the electrical.
If you have a suitable indoor space, the room package is by a wide margin the cheapest route to a real traditional sauna — you are not paying for a roof, walls or a floor you already own and already maintain.

Skip it ifyou live somewhere genuinely cold. Full-glass fronts bleed heat, and in a hard winter you will feel every square foot of it.

The three you supply that people underestimate are insulation, the vapor barrier and the 240 V circuit. Skip the vapor barrier and you will get moisture into the wall cavity — that is the mistake that ruins a converted room.
The timber grade difference
Clear kiln-dried western red cedar is knot-free and dimensionally stable. Rustic grade is the same species with knots left in, and it costs considerably less. Knots move as the wood cycles between hot-dry and cool-damp, which over years means checking, sap bleed and occasional splits.
Indoors, in a room you control, rustic grade is defensible and the savings are real. For benches — where knots meet bare skin at 190 °F — clear grade is worth the money. Several kits let you specify grade separately for walls and benches, which is the sensible split.
Sizing a room conversion
- 1Calculate the finished internal volume in cubic feet — after lining and insulation, not the raw stud-to-stud dimensions. The lining takes real space.
- 2Match a heater to that volume using the manufacturer's published rating. Harvia's 6 kW models cover 177–283 cubic feet; a 4' × 6' room at 7' finished height is around 168 cubic feet, so a 5 kW is well matched.
- 3Plan bench height against ceiling height. The upper bench should leave real headroom when you sit on it, and low ceilings are the constraint people discover late.
- 4Site the heater away from the door and to the manual's stated clearances.
- 5Plan ventilation — an inlet low near the heater and an outlet high on the opposite wall. Kits assume you will do this and rarely provide it.
Is a DIY shell kit worth it over a finished barrel?
Sometimes. A kit ships cheaper because it packs flat, and if you are competent and patient the saving is real. But a badly assembled shell leaks heat for its entire life, and the leaks are at joints you cannot easily get back to. A finished barrel arrives already assembled by people who assemble them all day.
Our honest position: take the kit if you enjoy the building and have a helper. Take the finished barrel if the sauna is the goal and the build is an obstacle. Neither choice is wrong, but people routinely underestimate which of the two they actually are.
