Start with the tub, then size the chiller to it

Nearly every unhappy cold plunge setup we read about is the same story: someone bought a 216-gallon tub because it looked comfortable, then paired it with a 1/3 HP chiller because it was the affordable one. The chiller runs continuously and never gets there. Neither component is faulty. The pairing is.

The volume column is our own reasoning from those figures plus insulation and ambient temperature — no manufacturer publishes a volume rating, which is precisely why this table had to be built rather than quoted. Three variables move those numbers more than anything on the spec sheet: whether the tub is insulated, whether it has a lid, and whether it lives indoors or out. An insulated tub with a lid in a garage is a completely different thermal problem from a bare inflatable on a sunny patio, and the same chiller will succeed at one and fail at the other.

Ice or chiller — the honest break-even

Ice is cheaper to start and relentless to continue. A chiller is expensive once and then costs you electricity. Where the crossover sits depends on your tub volume, your local ice price and your session frequency — all three of which are yours, not ours, so we show the arithmetic rather than a verdict in chiller vs ice and put the electricity side in cold plunge running costs.

The short version: if you plunge two or three times a week in a small insulated barrel, ice remains defensible for a long time. If you plunge daily, or your tub is over about 100 gallons, the ice bill catches a chiller faster than most people expect.

Filtration is not optional, and it is not sanitation

These are two different jobs and people routinely do only the first. A filter removes what you can see — skin, hair, debris — and a 50-micron cartridge in a standard 10-inch housing handles it for a few dollars a cartridge. Sanitation deals with what you cannot see, and that is ozone or a chemical. Filtering without sanitizing gives you clear water that is still biologically alive.

If you are adding ozone, add a venturi injector with it. Ozone bubbled into standing water mostly escapes to the air; drawn through a venturi into a moving line, it dissolves and does the job. What the listings do not publish

  • Pull-down time. Exactly one product we found publishes it with a stated starting temperature. Everyone else says 'powerful cooling'.
  • Wattage. Almost no chiller listing publishes a wall draw, which makes running cost impossible to calculate from the listing alone.
  • Tub volume, on several tubs. A tub sold as chiller-compatible that does not publish its gallonage cannot be matched to a chiller at all.
  • Insulation performance. 'Insulated' appears everywhere; an R-value appears nowhere.

Questions people actually ask

What size chiller do I need for my cold plunge?
Start from your tub's volume, then adjust for insulation and where it lives. As a starting point: 1/3 HP for up to roughly 100 gallons indoors in an insulated tub, 1/2 HP for 100–150 gallons, and 1 HP for anything larger or anything sitting outdoors in a hot climate. How cold does a cold plunge actually need to be?
Colder than you would choose for a swim and warmer than most people assume. Published protocols commonly sit between 50 and 59 °F. Every chiller in this category reaches at least 42 °F, so minimum temperature is rarely the constraint that should drive your purchase — capacity against your tub volume is.
Do I need a filter and an ozone generator, or just one?
They do different jobs. The filter removes visible debris; ozone deals with biology. Filtering alone gives you water that looks clean and is not. If you are running ozone, add a venturi injector too — ozone bubbled into still water mostly escapes to the air rather than dissolving.
Is an inflatable cold plunge tub a false economy?
It depends on how long you keep it. Inflatables cost far less, pack into a backpack and survive a house move, but the seams are the long-term failure point and a rigid tub will outlast several of them. If this is a permanent installation, buy rigid once. If you are testing the habit or you rent, an inflatable is the sensible call.
