Cold plunge vs ice bath
Mostly the same practice under two names, with one real difference: whether the temperature is controlled or whatever the melt gave you.

The short version: these are the same practice. Cold water immersion. The terms are used loosely and mostly interchangeably, and where people draw a distinction it usually comes down to how the water got cold.

The last row is the important one. Your body responds to water temperature and immersion time. It has no way of knowing whether a compressor or a bag of ice produced that temperature.
The one difference that genuinely matters
Temperature consistency. An ice bath is whatever temperature the ice, the water and the room produced that day, and it drifts upward over the session. A chilled plunge holds a setpoint.
That matters if you are trying to follow a protocol. Published cold-immersion research specifies temperatures and durations; "cold-ish for a while" is not the same intervention. If you want to do what a study did, you need to know what temperature you are actually in — which means a thermometer at minimum, and ideally a controlled temperature. See cold plunge protocol.
If you are not following a protocol and simply want to get in cold water regularly, the distinction is close to meaningless and ice is the cheaper route.
The practical differences
- Hygiene. A chilled tub holds water for days or weeks, which means it needs filtration and sanitation. An ice bath drained after each use does not. That is a genuine advantage of ice that rarely gets mentioned.
- Cost shape. Ice is low upfront and continuous thereafter. A chiller is high upfront and low thereafter. Which is cheaper depends on volume and frequency — the arithmetic is in chiller vs ice.
- Effort per session. Ice means fetching, carrying and waiting for it to work. A chiller means opening a lid. For a daily habit, that friction is what determines whether the habit survives.
- Where you can do it. An ice bath works in any tub anywhere, including a hotel bathroom. A chiller is an installation.
Is one colder than the other?
Ice water sits at 32 °F where ice and water coexist, so an ice bath with plenty of ice can in principle get colder than most chillers, which bottom out at 37–42 °F. In practice a well-mixed ice bath in a room-temperature space stabilizes well above freezing, and the difference is not one you would notice or benefit from.
More to the point, colder is not automatically better. Published protocols commonly sit between 50 and 59 °F, which every chiller reaches comfortably and which an ice bath overshoots easily. Which should you do?
Start with an ice bath, whatever you eventually want. It costs almost nothing, works in a tub you already own, and answers the only question that matters early on — whether you will keep doing this. Most people who buy a chiller first and a habit second regret the order.
Move to a chilled plunge when the friction of ice starts costing you sessions, or when you want to follow a protocol precisely enough that a controlled temperature is worth paying for. That is a real threshold and plenty of people never reach it.
