Cold plunge temperature guide
The temperatures in published cold water immersion research are warmer than most people assume, and colder is not automatically better. Here is what the literature actually used.

The short answer
Published cold water immersion research commonly works in the range of roughly 50 to 59 °F (10–15 °C), with durations typically measured in minutes rather than seconds or half-hours. Colder and longer is not the same intervention, and it is not obviously better — it is simply less like what was studied.
Every chiller in the mainstream category reaches at least 42 °F, so hitting a research-typical temperature is not a hardware problem. Which means the temperature question should almost never drive your chiller purchase — capacity against your tub volume should.
Why colder is not automatically better
Three reasons, and they compound.
- 1It is not what was studied. Extrapolating from a 12 °C protocol to a 4 °C one assumes the effect scales with cold, which the research does not establish. You are running an experiment on yourself rather than replicating one.
- 2The cold shock response is stronger. Sudden immersion in very cold water produces a more pronounced gasp reflex and cardiovascular response. That is the mechanism behind the genuine risks of cold water immersion, and it gets more pronounced as the water gets colder.
- 3You will do it less. A temperature you dread is a temperature you avoid. Consistency almost certainly matters more than intensity for anything you are hoping to get out of this.
The temperature and duration relationship

Durations are deliberately vague here because they vary enormously between studies and protocols, and giving you a specific number would imply a precision the literature does not support. What is consistent is that colder means shorter — the two move together.
The practical implication: if you are lowering the temperature, lower the duration too. Treating a colder plunge as a stronger version of the same session is the wrong mental model.
Measuring it
You cannot follow any protocol without knowing your water temperature, and "it feels cold" is not a measurement. A floating thermometer costs very little and is the difference between a repeatable practice and a vague one.
Two practical notes: measure at the depth you actually immerse to, since a tub can stratify if the water is not circulating, and measure at the start of the session rather than after — the water warms while you are in it, particularly in a small tub.
The safety points that are not optional
- Cold shock is real and it is immediate. The involuntary gasp on entry is a reflex, not a lack of willpower. Enter controlled and never head-first.
- Never plunge alone when you are new to it, and never after alcohol.
- Get out if you feel unwell. Dizziness, numbness beyond the expected, or confusion are reasons to stop immediately rather than to push through.
- Warm up gradually afterwards. Not with a scalding shower — moving around and dry layers is the ordinary approach.
- Medical conditions change this calculus entirely. Heart conditions, blood pressure, pregnancy and some medications all matter. Ask a doctor.
Starting temperature for a beginner
Warmer than you think, and then work down. Starting at the top of the research band — around 59 °F — and reducing over weeks builds tolerance and, more importantly, builds a habit that survives.
People who start at 40 °F because it sounds serious frequently stop within a month. That is not a moral failing; it is a predictable response to making something unpleasant enough to avoid.
What about naturally cold water?
If you live somewhere with a real winter, an outdoor tub reaches research-typical temperatures on its own for months. That is genuinely free, and it is worth knowing before you buy a chiller — you may be buying one for five or six months of the year rather than twelve.
Open water — lakes and sea — is a different proposition with its own risks, and outside what we cover here. The safety literature on cold water immersion largely comes from that context, which is worth remembering: the risks it describes are real.
