The best sauna controllers

The reason this matters is the argument on our is an infrared sauna worth it page: warm-up time is the biggest predictor of whether a sauna gets used. Twenty minutes of waiting before twenty minutes of sitting is where evening sessions go to die. Remote preheating removes that entirely, which makes a controller one of the few upgrades that changes behavior rather than comfort.

Match the controller to the heater, not the room

A controller is rated for a load. The Akozon publishes 9–15 kW at 220 V; the two iDOTODO boxes publish up to 30 A and 3,000 W at 110 V for far-infrared systems. Those are completely different devices for completely different saunas, and neither will do the other's job. Read your heater's kilowatt rating and voltage off its plate, then buy a controller rated at or above it. The infrared case is different from the traditional case

• Infrared cabins are 110 V systems with modest loads, and the iDOTODO boxes above are aimed squarely at them — a control box, an LCD panel, a temperature probe and three wires to the heating system. If an older infrared cabin's panel has failed, this is the repair.
• Traditional electric rooms are 220–240 V and want a controller rated in kilowatts, wired by an electrician, with the probe sited per the heater manual.
• Wood-fired rooms cannot be controlled at all — there is nothing to switch. That is exactly the gap the Harvia sensor fills: it works with wood-burning stoves and tells you when to add wood.

What a good Wi-Fi control actually gives you

HUUM's UKU is the reference here, and its published feature list is a fair description of what the category should offer: set the start and end time of heating, set the target temperature, check the current temperature remotely, and get a notification when the sauna is ready. The bundle also publishes a full electrical table — 4.5 kW at 18.8 A on a 30 A breaker with 10 AWG wire, up to 9 kW at 37.5 A on a 50 A breaker with 8 AWG — plus the room volume each output suits, and a limited three-year warranty excluding elements. Published wire gauges and breaker sizes are rare on a marketplace listing and they are exactly what your electrician will ask for.

The retrofit route

If your heater has its own built-in controls and you do not want to rewire anything, the Harvia Smart Sensor is the low-risk upgrade: a wireless sensor that measures temperature and humidity, tracks usage, and pushes alerts through the MyHarvia app — including a ten-minute warning before the room reaches temperature. Its published measuring range is 10–100 °C with an upper rating of 130 °C and a 1 m sensing distance. It cannot turn the sauna on. It can stop you walking downstairs three times to check, and on a wood-fired stove it can tell you when to add a log, which nothing else here does.

Where premium sits

The premium builders settle this by fitting the control at the factory. Sun Home specifies a HUUM DROP 6 kW heater in its three-person Nova on a dedicated 30 A hardwired circuit, and a HUUM HIVE Mini 9 kW in its six-person outdoor Solaris on 40 A — the same heater maker as the bundle above, with the heater and its circuit specified per model rather than left for you to match. Sun Home does not publish which control it ships with them, so treat the app side as unstated. If you are buying a room rather than upgrading one, that is what you are paying for.

The one we would skip

A controller that publishes no load rating. A control is the device that carries your heater's current. A listing that gives you a nice LCD photo and no kilowatt or amp figure is asking you to connect an unknown switch to a 30 or 40 amp circuit. Every pick above publishes a rating except the sensor, which carries no load at all — and that is the line.
