Infrared sauna upgrade kits: what is actually retrofittable
Before you replace a cabin, work out whether the thing annoying you is fixable. Some weaknesses are a hundred-dollar problem; others are a reason to start again.

If you already own an infrared cabin, the sensible first question is not "which cabin should I buy next" but "is the thing bothering me actually fixable". Sometimes it is, for very little. Sometimes it is structural and no accessory will help. This page sorts the two.

The upgrade that is genuinely worth doing
Adding red light is the one retrofit that changes what the cabin does rather than how comfortable it is. A standalone panel gives you the same 660 nm and 850 nm wavelengths a full-spectrum cabin's tubes emit, and it gives you something the built-in version cannot: control over distance.
That matters because dose is irradiance multiplied by time, and irradiance depends on how far the emitter is from your skin. A tube fixed in a cabin wall is at whatever distance the cabin puts it. A panel you position is at whatever distance you choose. Neither publishes an irradiance figure — see irradiance explained — but only one of them lets you change the variable.

The cheap comfort upgrades nobody mentions
- 1A seat pad. A hot bench against bare skin is genuinely unpleasant, and a felt or towelling pad fixes it for almost nothing. Highest impact per dollar in this whole list.
- 2A backrest. Sitting upright against a flat wall for 40 minutes is why people cut sessions short. A contoured backrest is a small purchase that changes how long you stay in.

The controller question
Preheat scheduling is the single feature most likely to increase how often you actually use a sauna, because a 30-to-45-minute warm-up is what turns a spontaneous session into a plan. If your cabin lacks it, a smart plug on the supply can sometimes provide it — but only if the cabin's controller resumes its previous state when power returns. Many do not; they wake in standby and wait for a button press, which defeats the purpose.
Test it before buying the plug: turn the cabin on, switch off at the wall, switch back on, and see whether it starts heating or sits waiting. That five-minute test answers the question definitively.
When to stop upgrading and replace
Three cabin weaknesses are structural and no accessory addresses them: it is too small, it does not reach a temperature you find useful, and it trips your breaker. The first two are fixed by a different cabin. The third is fixed by an electrician, and should be fixed regardless of whether you replace the cabin — a sauna repeatedly tripping a breaker is telling you something about the circuit.
