The best sauna heater guards

Start with your heater. Three of the five below are made for one heater family: HUUM's rails for its Drop and Hive Mini heaters, and the Harvia/Finlandia HPC3 railing for Cilindro 6, 7 and 9 kW heaters. The other two are SAWO cedar guards, three-sided and two-sided, sold by size rather than by heater. A rail that fits your heater's own mounts is the one to buy; a generic fence makes sense when your heater's maker does not offer one.

Buy the maker's rail if there is one

A rail made for your heater attaches to the heater's own fixing points and follows its shape. HUUM's rails fix to the heater with stainless steel supports and to the wall with stainless brackets; the HPC3 fixes to a Cilindro with stainless mounts. Plunge's traditional saunas use HUUM Drop heaters — a Drop 6 in The Sauna and a Drop 9 in the XL — and Plunge lists a heater safety rail among its sauna accessories. Some heater kits already include a guard of some kind: Harvia's KIP and The Wall kits on Amazon list a "stone guard" in the box, so check what yours came with before you buy another.

Sizing a cedar guard

The SAWO guards publish their inside dimensions — 22⅓ inches wide, 14⅛ deep and 14 high, inside a 24 × 15 × 14-inch frame — and say they are sized for protection without restricting airflow. Measure your heater's width and depth before you order, and follow your heater manual's clearance distances, which take priority over any accessory. Our heater sizing guide covers the heater itself.

Why a guard at all

Heater stones, and many heater casings, are hot enough to burn on contact, and in a small room a bench can put a knee or an elbow within reach. A guard marks where the heater ends. It matters most with children in the sauna, in tight rooms, and where the heater sits near a bench or the door.

Infrared saunas

Infrared cabins have no stove to guard; their heaters are panels in the walls, and some — Sun Home's Eclipse among them — add heaters behind the backrests and at calf height. Follow the cabin's manual. A heater guard is for a traditional stove.
