Sauna heater sizing guide

Heaters are rated for a room volume, not a person count. Here is the arithmetic, the adjustments that matter, and worked examples for three common rooms.

Undersizing a heater is the most common and most expensive mistake in building a sauna, and it happens because most listings publish a person count. A person count is a marketing figure. Volume is the specification, and the arithmetic is genuinely simple.

Step 1: Calculate your room volume

Length × width × height, in feet, gives cubic feet. Two details matter:

  • Measure the finished internal dimensions, after lining and insulation — not the raw framing. Lining takes real space, and on a small room the difference is material.
  • Use the actual ceiling height, not a nominal one. Sauna ceilings are often lower than the room they sit in.

The 6 kW figure is Harvia's own published range. Where a manufacturer does not publish one, you cannot size against it — which is a reason to prefer manufacturers that do. Circuit sizes are indicative; your electrician determines the actual breaker and conductors from the heater's installation manual.

Step 3: Adjust upward for these

Published ratings assume an insulated room in reasonable ambient conditions. Add capacity for:

  1. 1No insulation, or poor insulation. The largest single adjustment. An uninsulated barrel loses heat continuously and the rating does not anticipate it.
  2. 2A large glass panel or a glass door. Glass conducts heat far better than an insulated wall. A full-glass front is a substantial permanent load.
  3. 3A cold climate. Sub-freezing ambient temperatures mean the heater is fighting the weather as well as heating the room. See best saunas for cold climates.
  4. 4Uninsulated concrete or stone surfaces. Masonry is a large thermal mass that has to be heated before the room stabilizes.
  5. 5High ceilings. Already in the volume figure, but worth noting — you are heating air you never sit in.

Worked examples

A 4' × 6' room conversion

4 × 6 × 7 ft finished = 168 cubic feet. That sits just below Harvia's 177–283 cu ft range for its 6 kW models, so a 5 kW heater is well matched — which is exactly what the Northern Lights room package ships. If the room is in an unheated garage, a 6 kW is the safer choice.

A four-person barrel sauna

Barrel volume is harder because of the curve — the cross-section is not a rectangle. As a working approximation, take the barrel's internal diameter and length and treat it as a cylinder: π × (radius²) × length. A 6 ft diameter × 6 ft long barrel is roughly π × 9 × 6 ≈ 170 cubic feet, which again suggests 6 kW is comfortably adequate and 4.5 kW is workable in a mild climate.

That matches what the market does: 6 kW is the standard heater for a four-person barrel, and it is why the ALEKO 4.5 kW model works well on the smaller 3–4 person barrel and the same-class 6 kW struggles on the 5–6 person one.

8 × 6 × 7 ft = 336 cubic feet, which is above the 6 kW range before you account for anything else. Add a full-glass front and a cold climate and you are firmly in 8 kW-and-above territory, or wood-fired — where a 15 kW-equivalent stove handles it without any circuit at all.

Wood stoves: the same arithmetic, different units

Wood stoves publish an electric-equivalent rating. Do the volume calculation exactly as above, work out what electric heater the room would need, then match a stove whose equivalence covers it.

The one caution is the other direction: a 15 kW-equivalent stove in a small barrel will overheat it, which is uncomfortable and wasteful rather than dangerous. Wood stoves are less forgiving of oversizing than electric heaters, because you cannot thermostat a fire.

What sizing does not fix

  • Poor ventilation. A room needs an inlet low near the heater and an outlet high on the opposite wall. Without it the room feels stuffy well before it is actually too hot, and no heater size changes that.
  • A door that does not seal. A gap at the door is a permanent heat loss. On outdoor saunas this is often frost heave racking the structure — see foundations.

Is it bad to oversize a sauna heater?
Only mildly. An oversized heater costs a little more to install, may need a larger circuit, and wastes some energy per session. An undersized heater never gets the room properly hot, and fixing it means a new heater and possibly new wiring. Those are not symmetrical risks — if you are between sizes, go up.
How do you calculate the volume of a barrel sauna?
Treat it as a cylinder: π × radius² × length, using internal dimensions. A 6 ft diameter, 6 ft long barrel is roughly 170 cubic feet. That is an approximation because barrels are not perfect cylinders and benches take space, but it is close enough to size a heater against a published range.
