Outdoor sauna electrical guide
The line item that decides most outdoor sauna projects, and the one nobody prices before choosing a cabin. Here is what the run involves and how to avoid needing it.

Why 240 V
A traditional sauna heater has to raise a whole room to 175–195 °F and hold it there. That takes 4.5 to 8 kW for a residential room, and a 120 V circuit cannot deliver that much power without impractical current. So residential sauna heaters above roughly 4.5 kW run on 240 V.

Circuit sizes are indicative, not a specification. Actual breaker and conductor sizing depends on the specific heater's nameplate, the run length, the conductor material and your local code. Your electrician determines it from the heater's own installation manual — never from a table on a website, including this one.
What the run actually involves
- 1Panel capacity. You need a free double-pole slot and enough headroom in the service. A full panel means a subpanel or a service upgrade, which is a much larger job.
- 2The route. Overhead is cheaper and uglier. Underground is tidier and means trenching — through lawn, under paths, around whatever is already buried.
- 3Conduit and burial depth, which local code specifies.
- 4The disconnect. Outdoor installations typically need a means of disconnect at or near the sauna.
- 5Weatherproofing. Every outdoor enclosure and junction has to be rated for it.
- 6Permit and inspection. Almost always required for a new circuit of this size.
Distance is the variable that dominates the cost. A sauna 15 feet from the panel is a modest job. A sauna at the far end of a garden, with a path to cross, is a different project — and it is why we keep saying to get the quote before choosing the sauna.
The question to ask an electrician
"What would it cost to run a 240 V, 40 A circuit from my panel to this point in the garden, permitted and inspected?" Point at the spot. That question gets you a real number, and the number is what should shape your shopping.
Do it before you order the sauna. People routinely do it in the opposite order and then discover the project costs half again what they planned.
How to avoid needing it entirely
Three legitimate routes, and none of them is a compromise:
- Wood-fired. No circuit at all. A 15 kW-equivalent stove outperforms any residential electric heater and asks nothing of your panel. The cost is a 45-minute lead time and ash management — see wood-burning vs electric.
- Infrared, indoors. A 2,100–2,240 W cabin runs on a dedicated 20 A, 120 V circuit. That is a far smaller job, and it is often achievable in a finished basement without a trench at all.
- A room package in a space you already own. A garage or basement already has a panel nearby, which shortens the run dramatically. See best sauna kits.
Things not to do
What it costs to run once installed
Much less than people expect. A 6 kW heater drawing rated power for a 45-minute session uses 4.5 kWh — about $0.77 at $0.17/kWh — and the real figure is lower because the elements cycle once the room is up to temperature.

Working: 6 kW × 0.75 h = 4.5 kWh; × rate = cost. This assumes continuous rated draw for the whole session, which overstates the real figure. Substitute your own rate from your utility bill — full method in sauna running costs.
The install is a one-off and is the large number. The running cost is small and should not influence which heater you buy.
