Barrels heat fast and ship cheap. They also fail at the roof first, and most listings will not tell you what the roof is made of. Five picks, ranked on what is actually published.
The barrel shape is not decoration. A curved ceiling means less air volume above your head, so the same heater gets the room hotter sooner and holds it better — that is a real thermal advantage over a rectangular cabin of the same footprint. Barrels also ship cheaply because the staves pack flat.
The costs are headroom at the walls, a shape that suits sitting rather than standing, and a roof geometry that collects water where the curve flattens. That last one is where barrels fail, and it is the spec this page weighs most heavily.

What actually decides a barrel purchase
The heater, matched to the volume
Harvia publishes a rated room volume for its heaters — 177 to 283 cubic feet for the 6 kW models. That single figure solves the sizing problem, and it is why barrels shipping with a Harvia rank above barrels shipping with an unnamed element. An unbranded 6 kW element works until it fails, and then you are hunting for a replacement that fits the same opening.
Sizing is where the picks separate. The 4.5 kW into a 3–4 person barrel is correctly matched, and so is the 8 kW UL-certified Harvia in the ALEKO Liatris at 6–8 person — that is the pairing to look for, a heater scaled to the volume rather than to the price point. The wood, and the grade
Cedar for anything living outdoors. But read the wording carefully: western red cedar is a species claim, and rustic cedar is a grade claim meaning plenty of knots. Knots move, check and eventually leak in a structure that cycles between hot-and-wet and freezing. Rustic grade is not a disaster; it is a maintenance commitment, and you should know you are making one.

A front porch canopy keeps rain off the door and off you while you are opening it. That sounds cosmetic and is not: the door and its frame are the most weather-exposed joint on a barrel, and keeping direct water off them measurably extends their life.
