SISU Sauna: what the documentation says

The short version: SISU builds four Western Red Cedar saunas by hand in Northeast Ohio - two barrels and two cabins - and publishes more hard specification than most direct-sales brands, including exact circuit sizes and wire gauges per model. Two things deserve your attention before the cabin does. Its product pages advertise a three-year warranty, while the terms that actually govern a purchase made now describe one year on the complete unit and years two and three on structural components only. And its own terms state that the overhead clearance in SISU saunas does not meet HUUM's minimum safety requirement for the heater SISU sells with the Eddy, and ask the buyer to accept that risk. Neither of those is a reason not to buy one. Both are reasons to read the terms page rather than the product page.

The lineup

The barrels are the interesting half of the range. The Eddy is a genuine two-to-four seater on a 6-foot diameter, and it is the only model where SISU offers a choice of heater; the Edwin is the same diameter stretched to seven feet of depth, with benches down both sides. The two cabins are conventional upright rooms and, on the day we checked, both were sold out. All four are cedar, all four ship crated, and all four are assembled by you.

Heaters, and the clearance waiver

The certification line is worth reading twice. The three Homecraft heaters are described as CSA and UL certified; the HUUM Drop is described as CE certified, which is a self-declared European conformity mark rather than a North American safety listing. No standard number is given for any of them, and SISU claims no listing at all for the sauna enclosure itself - the structure, benches and wiring. That is not unusual in this market, but it is the kind of detail an inspector may ask about, and our permits and codes guide covers what that conversation involves.

We are not going to tell you what that means for your own installation, because we have not measured a SISU barrel and the interior dimensions are not published. What we can say is that SISU separately sells ceiling heat shields and heater baffles as accessories, and that the second heater option on the Eddy - the North American Homecraft Slim, with a CSA and UL claim and no equivalent waiver - exists. The warranty, and which version governs

All four product pages say the same thing: a three-year warranty on all of our saunas. The Terms and Conditions, effective 1 September 2026, say something different for anything bought on or after that date - a one-year limited warranty on the complete unit covering cedar, structural components and non-consumable heater parts, and from the start of year two to the end of year three, coverage limited to core structural components such as walls, floor, frame and heating unit. Titan Fitness, which sells the same saunas, publishes one year.

The terms also include a clause stating that no statement made by the seller, whether on its website or otherwise, creates any additional express or implied warranty. Read together, that clause and the product-page claim point in opposite directions, and the terms are the document you agree to at checkout. Anyone buying should ask SISU in writing which applies to their order and keep the answer.

• No labor. SISU states it is not responsible for labor, service or contractor costs for diagnosis, repair, removal or reinstallation. Parts only.
• Licensed electrician required, with proof. Electrical claims need an invoice or work order identifying the installer and date. Claims without it are not eligible. There is a separate installation checklist to complete with photographs.
• Diagnostics first, at your cost. Warranty parts are not shipped until required diagnostics are completed, and if you cannot perform them, engaging an electrician to do so is your expense.
• Non-transferable. Original purchaser only, on both the current and the legacy terms - so a sauna that comes with a house carries nothing.
• Cedar movement is not a defect. Surface checks up to an eighth of an inch deep, end checking, minor splitting, gaps up to a quarter inch between boards, and color change are all excluded as normal behavior of a natural material.
• Maintenance conditions apply. Damage from failing to tighten the barrel bands regularly, to apply exterior protection, or to maintain ventilation and drying is excluded - see outdoor sauna winter maintenance.
• Commercial use is one year, and must be declared. Any non-residential setting, declared in writing before or at installation; SISU states that failure to disclose commercial use may affect eligibility.

That is a demanding but not unreasonable set of conditions for a hand-built cedar structure a stranger assembles outdoors. The exclusion list is honest about what cedar does. The gap between the marketing line and the governing document is the part we would want closed before paying.

Delivery, and the fees if you change your mind

SISU publishes a four-to-six week processing time and three to seven business days in transit, shipped crated by freight with a liftgate, nationwide including Alaska and Hawaii. Standard delivery is curbside - the driver lowers the crate at the end of your driveway, and SISU says plainly that final placement and assembly are not included. Delivery beyond the curb costs extra and may not be available on steep, gravel or unpaved driveways. Risk of loss passes to the buyer when the goods reach the carrier, and visible crate damage must be noted on the proof of delivery before you sign or your ability to claim may be limited. That last sentence is the single most useful thing on the page: inspect the crate at the curb, in front of the driver.

Those return terms are strict, and they are strictest exactly where a buyer is most likely to need them - after the crate is open. Note also that the same physical sauna carries three different return regimes depending on where you buy it: SISU's own fee structure, Titan Fitness's 30 days with a 20 percent restocking fee, and Equinox's listing marked non-returnable. Heat, and how long you wait for it

SISU publishes 110-195 °F across the range and 50-90 minutes to heat, varying with weather and siting. Only the Eddy with the HUUM Drop reaches the 230 °F that the Eddy's own FAQ mentions and that Titan prints for all four models - the Homecraft heaters are published at 195 °F. For a traditional room, 195 °F with water on the stones is a proper sauna; if you are chasing a Finnish 200-plus, the HUUM Eddy is the only configuration in this range that gets there, and that is the configuration with the clearance waiver attached. All four are wet or dry: the heaters give dry heat, and a bucket and ladle give steam.

An older FAQ page, still live but unlinked from the site navigation, contradicts the current pages on nearly every one of these numbers - 25 to 35 minutes to heat, a 230 °F ceiling brand-wide, a 10/2 wire with a NEMA 6-30R receptacle rather than the hardwired #10/3 the product pages specify, and 30 amps across the board. Work from the product pages and the terms, and treat anything you find on the legacy FAQ, or in a search snippet quoting it, as out of date.

Who builds them

SISU Lifestyle LLC, trading as SISU Sauna Co., of Avon, Ohio, with a warehouse in Burton. The company describes its saunas as hand-built by Amish craftsmen in Northeast Ohio, founded in August 2022 by Nick Dadas and Peter Nelson II with a manufacturing partner whose family had Finnish roots - the first barrel was named the Edwin after his father. Titan publishes the cedar as US-sourced. We found no CPSC recall for SISU, SISU Lifestyle LLC or SISU Sauna Co. Domestic hand-building is the genuine differentiator here, and it is the reason to put SISU next to Almost Heaven and Redwood Outdoors rather than next to an import.

Assembly is a real job but not a large one: SISU says two people and half a day for the Eddy, three people and half a day for the rest, and puts most customers at four to eight hours. It asks for a level, well-drained base of gravel, pavers, concrete or deck - explicitly not grass, dirt or mulch - with 12 to 18 inches of clearance at the sides and back and three to four feet at the front. Where the numbers disagree

• Warranty: three years on SISU's product pages, one year plus two structural on SISU's terms, one year on Titan's listings.
• Temperature: Titan prints 110-230 °F for all four; SISU publishes 195 °F for three of the four.
• Assembly time: Titan says two to three hours for the Eddy and four to five for the cabins; SISU says half a day. The cabins' own FAQs say two people where the body copy says three.
• The Charlie's heater: Titan's page text offers a HUUM Drop 6 kW or a Homecraft Slim 6 kW; SISU's own variant data offers no HUUM option on the Charlie at all.
• Shipping: Titan advertises free shipping on all items; SISU's terms make the customer responsible for all delivery costs.
• The Edwin's roof: the page's what-is-included text names a roof kit, but the base configuration is explicitly No Roof Kit and the roof is a paid upgrade.
• The Charlie's own page describes a cabin as a Western Red Cedar Barrel Sauna and gives its width as a diameter - a copy error, but a reminder to confirm any figure that matters in writing.
• Wire gauge on the Crew: 50 amps on the same #8/3 SISU specifies for the 40-amp models. Have your electrician confirm that against the code table before you buy wire.

What SISU does not publish

• Interior dimensions. Offered only as linked PDF drawings; the text is not extractable, so bench length and headroom are unverified - and headroom is the figure the clearance waiver turns on.
• Wood or stave thickness. Not stated for any model. Third-party sites quote figures; none of them is SISU's.
• Crated or assembled weight. Not published, which matters for both the delivery route and the base.
• Bench, door and glass dimensions, ventilation specification, and insulation details on the cabins.
• Any safety listing for the enclosure, and any standard number behind the heater certifications that are claimed.

• A working shipping policy page. It returns a 404, and the refund policy page renders empty; the substantive terms live only on the disclaimer page.

Alternatives you can buy today

If you want a cedar barrel through a normal retail channel now, the picks below are in the class. They are not SISU products, and none is hand-built in Ohio - that is the thing you give up. What you get back is a straightforward return path and, in most cases, a lower price. Our honest position

SISU publishes more usable specification than most direct-sales sauna brands, and a hand-built American cedar barrel with a named premium heater option is a genuinely good thing to be able to buy. The entry barrel sits in the high four figures before the roof kit, and the largest cabin is well into five figures, which puts the range above the imported kits above and in the same territory as the established US makers. We would buy on the strength of the build and the heater choice. We would also, before paying: get the applicable warranty term confirmed in writing, ask directly about the HUUM overhead clearance and whether the Homecraft configuration avoids it, request the interior dimensions and the crated weight, and read the cancellation fees while the option to cancel is still cheap.
