Sauna lighting splits into three things people conflate: the light source (a bar or a strip), the fixture (a vapor-proof wall fitting that takes a bulb), and the shade (a slatted cedar or wooden cover that turns a hard light into a soft one). Most saunas want two of the three. This page covers all of them, because a search for sauna lights returns them mixed together.

The power supply is the thing everyone forgets

This is where a cheap strip stops being cheap. Every 24 V strip here ships without a power supply, and one listing says so in capitals: bare wires at one end, no plug, no cord. You need a 24 V adapter of at least 50 to 60 W per roll, mounted outside the hot room, and a route for the low-voltage cable in. The Almost Heaven light bar is the opposite proposition — a waterproof supply that plugs into a 110 V outlet, mounting materials and an on/off switch on a 24-inch cord, all in the box. That is why it leads this page despite publishing neither of the two numbers above: for most people the complete kit is the correct purchase.

Color temperature, and why nobody uses daylight white

Both strips here are warm: 3000 K warm white, and 2000 K amber gold, which the listing describes as mimicking candlelight. There is a reason the category has settled there. A sauna is a dim room you sit in with your eyes half closed; cool white light in a cedar cabin looks like a dentist's waiting room and reads every knot in the wood as a flaw. If you are choosing between the two, 3000 K is a normal warm light and 2000 K is markedly orange — closer to a fire, and the better match for a wood-fired room.

Where to put it

• Behind the backrest or under the bench. Indirect light, no glare in anyone's eyes, and the strip is out of the hottest air at ceiling level.
• Along the ceiling edge. The classic cove. Use the higher heat rating here — ceiling air in a traditional room is the hottest part of the cabin.
• Never directly above or beside the heater. Every manufacturer's clearance applies to lights as much as to timber.
• Cut to fit. Both strips are cuttable every 50 mm and rejoinable, which is what makes them work in a barrel sauna where nothing is straight.

Shades are for fixtures, not for strips

A cedar shade is a slatted wooden cover that sits over a vapor-proof wall fixture and turns a bare bulb into diffuse, striped light. Two things to be clear about. First, the shade does not include the fixture — The Sauna Place shade states explicitly that it fits standard vapor-proof sauna light fixtures, sold separately. Second, the fixture does not include the bulb — the Milisten E27 housing says the same. A wall light in a sauna is therefore three purchases, and the listings are honest about it if you read them. Strips need none of this, which is part of their appeal.

Where premium sits

Lighting is one of the few areas where the premium builders and the marketplace converge: Almost Heaven, which builds saunas in West Virginia and is part of Harvia, sells the light bar above directly, and its own accessory line pairs it with a backrest and a leg rest. Sun Home builds lighting into its cabins rather than selling it separately. If you are lighting a cabin you already own, a complete kit from a sauna maker is the low-risk route; if you are building a room, strips give you control a fixture cannot.

The one we would skip

Any LED strip that does not publish an operating temperature range. A search for sauna lights returns a great many ordinary household strips with "sauna" in the title, and a standard adhesive-backed strip in a hot ceiling cove will have its adhesive fail and its LEDs dim within a season. The figure is published when it exists. If it is absent, assume it does not exist.
