A porch is a roof over the door and somewhere to sit between rounds. On a barrel it also adds length and weight, and a bigger pad to build — worth it if you will use it.
A standard barrel sauna opens straight onto the garden: step out and you are in the rain or the snow. A porch — or a canopy, as Almost Heaven calls its version — extends the barrel beyond the door, usually with benches under the overhang. What a porch or canopy buys you
- A dry doorway. The door opens under cover rather than straight into the weather.
- Somewhere to cool down. Almost Heaven describes its canopy benches as a place to cool off or store towels.
- Storage. Almost Heaven suggests the Grandview's one-foot canopy for holding logs as well as towels.
The costs are real too: a porch adds length and weight, so the pad has to be larger, and more of the structure is exposed timber. Almost Heaven's Charleston makes the point in numbers — a two-foot canopy, which it describes as double the depth of its other models, in front of six feet of sauna space.
Porch, canopy or changing room
Almost Heaven's range shows the three formats clearly. Its canopy barrels — the two-person Vienna, the two-to-four-person Audra, the Charleston, the Grandview and the Huntington — put benches under a one- or two-foot overhang. Its Shenandoah goes further: ten feet long, with a four-foot changing room and a six-foot sauna room. Its Appalachia cabin adds a full front porch and an attached changing room.
