The best sauna scents and essential oils
A few drops in the bucket, never on the stones. Sun Home's own instructions say exactly that, and it is the whole method. The rest is choosing a scent — and knowing that an infrared cabin is not the place for one.
Scent in a traditional sauna comes from the water you ladle onto the stones. Mix a fragrance into the bucket and the steam carries it. That is the method, and it is the only one: Sun Home's instructions for its Nova say never to pour oils or alcohol directly on the stones, and to mix a few drops of sauna-safe oil into the bucket instead. Harvia's guidance for its own sauna scents is the same idea — mix the scent with your sauna water.

How to use a sauna scent
- 1Check your heater manual first. Some manufacturers advise against additives entirely, and the manual is the authority for your heater.
- 2Add it to the bucket, not the stones. A few drops of oil, or the dose on a sauna-fragrance bottle, into the water.
- 3Ladle as usual. The scent rises with the steam.
- 4Rinse the bucket afterward, so the next session starts clean.
Traditional saunas only
An infrared cabin has no stones and no water. Sun Home's care advice for its Solstice infrared cabin is to keep water, harsh cleaners and abrasives off the wood — dry heat is the point — so a bucket of scented water has no place in it. If you want scent with infrared, keep it outside the cabin.
Sauna fragrance or essential oil
A sauna fragrance is sold to be mixed with sauna water: the RENTO pick is made in Finland for sauna use, and Harvia sells eucalyptus, peppermint, birch, pine and tar scents for the same job. An essential oil is a concentrate sold for many uses; the oils here either name sauna use or come with a dropper to dose them in drops. Either way, it goes in the water, diluted.
