Sun Home Luminar 2 vs Luminar 5

The short version: the Luminar 2 has three far-infrared and six full-spectrum heaters on a dedicated 240 V, 20 A GFCI circuit, in a 51.5 × 57-inch footprint at 970 lb. The Luminar 5 has five far-infrared and ten full-spectrum heaters on a 30 A circuit, in a 51.75 × 82.25-inch footprint at 1,270 lb. Everything else — the aluminum shell, the cedar interior, the included cover, the warranty — is the same. Choose by the number of people and the circuit you can run to the garden.

Heat and heaters

Sun Home describes glass-tube full-spectrum heaters that give visible radiant heat, with flat carbon far-infrared panels warming from the floor, the walls and the calf line. The Luminar 5 carries fifteen heaters to the Luminar 2's nine. Sun Home says both are built for year-round use and operate below 25 °F, though cold air lengthens the warm-up — the honest trade of any outdoor infrared cabin, which our cold climate page covers. An optional red light panel runs on its own controls; Sun Home sells it separately as an add-on.

The circuit and the placement

Both run on a dedicated 240 V GFCI circuit installed by a licensed electrician — 20 A for the Luminar 2, 30 A for the Luminar 5 — and Sun Home asks for the sauna to sit at least five feet from other electrical devices. Its warranty terms separately require any sauna to stand at least five feet from a cold plunge, shower, bathtub or hot tub. The cabin arrives palletized at the curb, and Sun Home says two or more people assemble the prefabricated panels in about half a day; have the circuit ready before the truck. The cover and the snow

A fitted all-weather cover comes with both, and Sun Home says using it is optional — not using it does not by itself void the warranty, and it helps protect the exterior and hold heat in cold weather. Sun Home also asks owners to clear snow from the base and roof, because the roof is not built to carry more than a foot of it, and to keep the ventilation openings clear. The warranty, which is the same

• Limited lifetime on cabinetry and heaters, which Sun Home's terms apply for up to seven years, residential only.
• Three years on the exterior cabin — the aluminum shell — and three years on controls.
• One year on LED lighting, glass doors and audio.
• Parts, labor and shipping for the first 90 days from delivery.
• Weathering and weather events are excluded, which matters for a building that lives outdoors.

Which to choose

• The Luminar 2, if it is one or two of you, a 20 A run is easier, and the smaller 57-inch-wide footprint suits the space.
• The Luminar 5, if you want room for a family, the extra heaters, and you can run a 30 A circuit and carry a 1,270-lb cabin on your pad.
