The one figure almost nobody publishes
Pull-down time — how long to take a tub from ambient to target. It is the number that tells you whether a chiller can actually do the job, and exactly one product in our survey publishes it: the Diveblast, at 90 °F to 39 °F in three to nine hours.
That range is wide and the variables behind it are not stated, so it is not a great figure. It is still infinitely more useful than "powerful cooling", and publishing it at all is why that unit ranks where it does. If more manufacturers did this, buying a chiller would be a solved problem.
Integrated or external?
A chiller needs water moving through it, and it needs the water filtered or the exchanger clogs. Manufacturers solve that in three ways and the difference is more practical than it sounds:
- Fully integrated — pump and filter inside the box. One purchase, one plug, fewest leak points. The 1/3 HP pick here is the clean example.
- External pump and filter — supplied but outside the unit. More hose connections, more places to leak, but every component is user-serviceable in ten minutes. On a device running continuously, that is a genuine advantage.
- Drop-in — the cooling element sits in the water and there is no plumbing at all. No leak points whatsoever, but no filtration either, and the element takes up tub space.
Our view: integrated for most people, external if you are the sort who would rather replace a pump than send a box away, drop-in if you have ever fought a hose clamp on a winter morning and decided never again.
What running cost actually is
Almost no chiller listing publishes a wattage, which makes running cost impossible to calculate from the listing alone. What we can say from the physics: a chiller does not run continuously once the tub is at temperature — it cycles to hold it, and how often depends almost entirely on insulation, the lid, and where the tub lives.

Filtration is not sanitation
Two different jobs, and chillers vary in which they do. A filter removes debris; ozone deals with biology.
