Cold plunge filtration guide
Filtration and sanitation are two jobs and most setups do one. Here is what each component actually does, how they fit together, and what none of them replace.

If you drain and refill after every session, you need none of this. If you run a chiller — which is the entire point of a chiller — the water sits for days or weeks, and then you need both filtration and sanitation.
The two jobs

The common mistake is doing only the first. Water that looks clean and has had nothing done about biology is exactly the situation people are surprised by.
A working system, in order
- 1Circulation. Something has to move the water. Often the pump built into your chiller; if the chiller has none, you need one.
- 2Filtration. A 10-inch housing on 3/4-inch ports with a 50 micron cartridge. Standard sizes mean cheap, widely available cartridges. Fit a condensation sleeve — a cold housing drips continuously without one.
- 3Venturi injection, if you are running ozone. Ozone bubbled into standing water mostly escapes to the air; drawn through a venturi into a moving line, it dissolves.
- 4Ozone generation on a timer, running between sessions and never with anyone in the water.
- 5Return below the waterline, so the water is not aerated and warmed on its way back in.
Micron ratings
50 micron is the sensible default for a plunge tub. It catches hair, skin and debris without clogging quickly or restricting flow. Finer cartridges clog fast, restrict flow — which matters if a venturi needs that flow to work — and do not buy you biological safety, because bacteria are smaller than any cartridge rating.
The practical routine is to rinse cartridges when flow drops and replace them when rinsing stops helping. Nobody publishes an interval and it depends on how many people use the tub, so watch the flow rather than the calendar.
Ozone, properly
Ozone is a well-established water treatment and it works well in a cold plunge, provided two conditions are met.
It must dissolve. That needs a venturi injector in a line with flow. Without one, most of the ozone leaves the water surface and does nothing except accumulate in the air above the tub — which is the opposite of what you want.
It must be sized. Output should match your water volume, and almost no consumer generator publishes an output in mg/h. That makes sizing guesswork, and it is a real gap in this category rather than a detail.
What about chemicals?
Chlorine and bromine work and are well understood, and some cold plunge owners use them. Two considerations specific to this application: cold water holds chemistry differently from a hot tub, and you are immersing frequently and briefly rather than soaking occasionally, so skin exposure patterns differ.
We are not going to give you dosing guidance, because that is a water-chemistry question with real safety implications and it depends on your volume, your fill water and your usage. If you go the chemical route, follow the product's own instructions and test the water rather than estimating. Ozone is the more common choice in this category largely because it leaves no residual.
Changing the water
Filtration and ozone extend how long a fill stays usable. They do not make it indefinite: dissolved matter accumulates regardless and no cartridge removes it.
No manufacturer publishes a change interval and it depends on how many people use the tub and how often, so we will not invent one. Watch the water instead — cloudiness, any smell, or slipperiness on the walls means it is past time, whatever the calendar says. Slipperiness in particular is biofilm, and it means the sanitation is not keeping up.
The things that reduce the whole problem
- A lid. Keeps leaves, insects and dust out entirely. The cheapest water-care investment available and it also holds temperature.
- Rinse before you get in. Most of what a filter removes came off a person. A quick rinse dramatically reduces the load.
- Keep it out of the sun. Warmer water is friendlier to biology, and sun degrades ozone.
- Do not top up with garden hose water carelessly. You are adding whatever is in the line, including whatever has been sitting in a warm hose.
The bathtub case
If you are chilling a bathtub, everything above applies with one addition: you presumably want to bathe in it too. Draining and refilling for each use makes filtration pointless and throws away chilled water. Leaving it full means the bath is unavailable.
