The electrical line, which usually dominates

Every electric sauna heater above roughly 4.5 kW needs 240 V. To the back of a garden that means a trench, conduit, a permitted circuit and an electrician's time — and on a long run it routinely rivals or exceeds the cost of the sauna itself.

Get this quoted before you choose anything. The question is: "what would it cost to run a 240 V, 40 A circuit from my panel to this point, permitted and inspected?" Point at the spot. The answer sometimes changes which category you buy from entirely.

The way to make it disappear is a wood-fired sauna, which needs no circuit at all. That is not a compromise — it is a different set of trade-offs, described in wood-burning vs electric.

The chiller side cannot be calculated the same way, because almost no chiller listing publishes a wattage. What is certain is that it cycles rather than running flat out, and that insulation, a lid and siting matter more to the bill than the chiller model does. See cold plunge running costs.

The cheapest sensible path

In order, and each step tells you something before you commit to the next:

  1. 1Establish the habit for almost nothing. A sauna blanket or steam tent and a bath with bagged ice. One month of this tells you whether you will keep going.
  2. 2Get the electrical quote. Before choosing any product. It may redirect you towards wood-firing or towards an indoor infrared cabin.
  3. 3Do the groundwork once, for both. Base, drainage, surfaces.
  4. 4Add the sauna. A room package if you have an indoor space going spare — much the cheapest route to a real traditional sauna.
  5. 5Add the tub, and run it on ambient temperature first if you live somewhere cold. A winter of free cold water tells you exactly what you need from a chiller.
  6. 6Add the chiller last, sized to the tub you own and the usage you observed rather than to a guess.

Where to spend, and where not to

Spend on:

  • The electrical work, done properly. It is a safety issue and it determines what you can buy at all.
  • Insulation, both halves. In the sauna it means less heater and lower running cost; in the plunge it means less chiller and less ice. Cheapest performance upgrade available on either side.
  • A named-brand heater. A published room volume rating and parts available in year eight.
  • Lids and covers. The single highest-value accessory on the plunge, and a roof covering is what determines whether a barrel survives.

Do not spend on:

  • Capacity you will not use. A four-person sauna and a 216-gallon tub both cost you on every session, forever.
  • Bluetooth speakers, chromotherapy lighting and 'oxygen bars'. Impossible to evaluate, cheap for the manufacturer, and a failure point in a hostile environment.
  • Premium finishes over correct sizing. A well-sized mid-range setup beats an oversized premium one.
  • A chiller bought before the tub. You cannot size one without knowing the volume.

The consumables nobody budgets for

  • Sauna stones, which are a consumable and are frequently not included with wood stoves — one stove in our survey publishes a 55 lb capacity with stones excluded.
  • Filter cartridges, a few dollars each if you bought a standard 10-inch housing and considerably more if you did not.
  • Ozone generator plates, which degrade over time.
  • Firewood, if you went wood-fired — a space commitment as much as a cost one.
  • Ice, if you have not bought a chiller. Roughly 45 lb to drop a 77-gallon tub by 10 °F as a theoretical floor, per session.

The cold-climate discount

Worth building into the plan explicitly: if you live somewhere with a real winter, an outdoor plunge tub reaches research-typical temperatures on its own for five or six months. You are buying and running a chiller for the warm half of the year rather than all of it, which halves that running cost and makes a smaller unit entirely defensible.

It is the one place where a hard winter is an advantage in this hobby, and it is worth structuring the purchase around.
