Where to buy a sauna

The short version: Amazon shows you a price instantly and gives you a short, clean return window with a marketplace warranty behind it. A warehouse club shows you fewer models and the best return position in the category. Buying direct from a manufacturer gets you the longest warranties and real support, with restocking fees that make changing your mind expensive. A dealer gets you design help, installation and someone to call — and no published price at all. Match the channel to which of those you actually need.

What a restocking fee really costs

This is the number that separates the channels once something goes wrong. Manufacturer-direct policies we have read on this site run from 20 percent plus freight both ways to unopened-box-only returns where assembling the sauna forfeits the right to send it back. On a $5,000 cabin, 20 percent is $1,000 before the truck. Amazon's standard return window on a freight item is not friction-free either, but it does not carry that fee. Where each channel is genuinely the right answer

• Amazon — one- and two-person infrared cabins, blankets, steam tents, heaters, stones and every accessory. It is also the only channel that publishes prices for the budget end of the market at all. Our roundups are built on it for that reason.
• Warehouse club — an outdoor barrel with a Harvia heater or a mid-size infrared cabin, when the return policy matters more than model choice.
• Manufacturer direct — premium infrared brands, anything where the warranty is a reason you are buying, and cabins that simply are not sold elsewhere. See best sauna brands.

Questions to ask before you pay, whatever the channel

2. 2What does assembly involve, how many people, and is it offered as a service?
3. 3What circuit does it need, in volts and amps, and is the plug type stated?
4. 4What exactly does the warranty cover, for how long, and does it transfer if I sell the house?
5. 5What does a return cost me in fees and freight, and does opening the box forfeit it?
6. 6Is the heater a named brand with a published rated volume, or unbranded?

Buying used

Worth considering for outdoor cabins and worth caution for infrared. Warranties in this category are overwhelmingly non-transferable — several we have read terminate on owner transfer or relocation outright — so a used cabin is sold as seen. Check the heater's age and listing marks, check for water damage at the base and around the door, and budget for a new stove if it is an outdoor room of unknown age.
