Nootka Saunas: what the documentation says

A Squamish, British Columbia maker of Western Red Cedar barrels that builds its own electric heater, offers professional assembly in some regions, and publishes a seating figure that changes depending on which heater you pick.

Western red cedar boards stacked for sauna construction

The short version: Nootka builds Western Red Cedar barrel saunas in Squamish, British Columbia, mills its cedar locally, makes its own electric heater, and will send a trained builder to assemble the thing for you in some regions. Its documentation is better than most of this category on the things that matter at purchase - the warranty is tiered and plainly written, the electrical requirement is stated per heater, and the seating figure honestly changes depending on whether you choose electric or wood. It is noticeably worse on the thing you would expect to be easy: it does not publish the dimensions of its own saunas anywhere we could find. Two numbers deserve a closer look before you read anything into them - a 10 to 15 minute heat-up claim, and a 194 °F ceiling that is a certification rule rather than a limitation of the build.

The lineup

Two barrel lengths, 8 foot and 10 foot, each configurable with or without a heater, with or without a roof, with a standard or full glass door, and with or without a rear window. A cube model is referenced on the site but its specifications and configurator were not published on the pages we read, so we are not going to describe it. Everything is built to order with a published lead time of four to five weeks.

Nootka's FAQ states these seating figures; its 10 ft product page separately says 6+ people for the electric configuration, where the FAQ says up to 8. Read on 2026-10-01.

That seating table is the most useful thing Nootka publishes, and almost nobody else in this category publishes it. A wood stove sits inside the room and needs clearance around it, so it eats bench space that an electric heater on the wall does not. Choosing wood on the 8 foot barrel halves the capacity, from four people to two. If you are buying a barrel for a family and you like the idea of a fire, that is the trade-off stated in plain numbers, and it is worth more than any marketing paragraph on the page. Our wood-burning vs electric comparison covers the rest of that decision.

Why it stops at 194 °F

Nootka publishes a maximum of 90 °C, or 194 °F, on electric models, and states the reason: CSA governs the maximum temperature for electric sauna heaters to 90 °C. That is a certification rule, not a weakness in the cabin, and it is the single most clarifying sentence we have read on a sauna manufacturer's site this year. It explains something that confuses a lot of shoppers - why one brand advertises 230 °F and another with a comparable build and a bigger heater advertises 194 °F. Often the difference is which safety regime the heater was certified under, not how well the room holds heat.

Nootka adds that wood-fired saunas "can get slightly hotter depending on the type of wood being burned," which follows - a wood stove is not an electric appliance governed by that rule. If you want a Finnish 200-plus in an electric room, this is the constraint to understand before you shop, and it is a reason to read a published maximum as a certification artifact rather than a quality score. Our sauna temperature guide covers what those numbers mean in use.

The 10 to 15 minute claim

Nootka states that an electric model "typically takes about 10-15 minutes to reach 90C (194F)," and 30 to 45 minutes on wood. It also states that a metal roof "speeds up the heating time by about 20%." The 10 to 15 minute figure is strikingly fast for this category - other cedar barrel makers publish 50 to 90 minutes for electric - and it deserves a careful reading rather than either acceptance or dismissal.

Two things are worth knowing. First, Nootka fits a 9 kW heater as standard in a barrel this size, which is a lot of heater for the volume, and a well-sealed cedar barrel is a small air space. Reaching an air temperature of 194 °F quickly is entirely plausible on that combination. Second, Nootka does not state what is being measured, or where. Air temperature at a thermostat and a stone mass hot enough to take repeated water throws without the room going flat are different milestones, and the second one always takes longer than the first. Neither Nootka nor any other brand we have read publishes a time to the second. We would plan a session around the longer figure and treat 10 to 15 minutes as the time until the room is usable rather than the time until it is at its best.

Electrical, and the heater Nootka builds itself

7.5 kW Nootka electric, optional240 V40 A, non-GFIHardwired to the panel by a certified electrician

Nootka states that all its electric heaters are 240 V and must be hardwired, and that "the heater wiring and the connection of the sauna to your panel must be done by a certified electrician." Wire gauge is not published. Read on 2026-10-01.

Building your own heater is unusual for a cabin maker this size, and it cuts both ways. In Nootka's favor: the heater and the controller are designed for the room, the control options are properly thought through, and the warranty covers the heater as part of the sauna rather than pointing you at a third party. Against it: a proprietary heater has no independent spec sheet to compare, no third-party review history, and no parts channel outside the manufacturer. A Harvia or a HUUM in the same cabin would give you all three - that is the case we make in Harvia heaters compared - and it is the main reason to ask Nootka directly about parts availability before buying. Note also that no safety certification is published for the Nootka heater on the pages we read, even though the CSA temperature rule is cited; the 194 °F ceiling implies a CSA-governed heater, but the implication is not the same as a published listing, and we would ask.

The wood option is the Harvia M3, which matters commercially: it is a stove you can buy on its own, and Nootka's price for it as an upgrade is higher than the stove costs separately. If you are building a room rather than buying one, or re-heating an existing barrel, that is worth knowing - it is the first pick below. Our heater sizing guide covers matching output to room volume, and best sauna stones covers the 66 pounds of stone an M3 needs.

The warranty, which is actually well written

We spend most of these reviews pointing out where a warranty contradicts a product page. Nootka's does not. It is tiered, specific, and says what it means:

  • Year 1 - full coverage, parts and shipping, on "any Nootka sauna room component, heater, controller, or LED light found to have a manufacturing defect."
  • Year 2 - parts only; the customer pays shipping.
  • Years 3 to 5 - structure only, and the scope is named: penetrative wood rot, glass broken by a manufacturing defect, and rust on roof structures.
  • Harvia M3 stove and accessories - one year.
  • Excluded - heating elements as consumables, cosmetic damage, normal wear, mold, mildew, water stains, UV fading, and natural cedar characteristics such as checking, knots and grain variation.
  • No labor, at any stage - Nootka does not cover electrician, contractor or tradesperson fees for diagnosis, wiring, rewiring or installation.
  • Non-transferable - original purchaser only, so a sauna that comes with a house carries nothing.
  • Voided entirely by electrical work not done by a licensed, certified electrician, or by commercial use of a sauna sold for residential use.

Two conditions are worth planning around rather than just noting. Nootka requires that the original installing electrician remain available for electrical claims, which means keeping the invoice and the name for five years. And commercial use voids the warranty in its entirety - relevant given that Nootka publicizes hotel clients, so if you are buying for a rental or an Airbnb, raise it in writing before you order rather than after. Our permits and codes guide covers the inspection side of the same conversation.

Ordering, delivery and the cancellation ladder

Nootka delivers across North America, and in select regions sends a trained builder who assembles the sauna in a published five to six hours and does a cleanup and walkthrough. Everywhere else it arrives flat-packed with a guide and videos, and Nootka recommends setting aside a weekend and says two people make it easier. Rates depend on location and model and are shown at checkout. The customer is responsible for a level prepared site with a clear pathway, the licensed electrician, and any HOA or permit approvals.

Professional assembly is a genuine differentiator against the kit brands, and it is the strongest practical argument for paying a direct-sales premium. A flat-pack barrel is a real weekend of work; five to six hours of someone else's is worth something concrete. The catch is that availability is regional, so confirm it covers your address before you build a budget around it.

Published cancellation fees
When you cancelWhat is deducted
Within 24 hours$150 plus credit card processing fees
1-3 days after payment$400 plus processing fees
4-7 days after payment$650 plus processing fees
After 7 days, before shippingThe full deposit is non-refundable; shipping costs are refunded

Nootka's terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada, which is worth knowing if you are a US buyer - your recourse sits in a Canadian jurisdiction. The terms we read did not state risk of loss in transit, damage inspection requirements, or a returns policy separate from these cancellation terms. Read on 2026-10-01.

That ladder escalates quickly, and the week after payment is the whole window in which changing your mind is merely expensive rather than final. Decide on the roof, the door, the window and the heater before you pay, not after - the options are where the money is, and the base configuration includes none of them.

Siting it

Nootka is more relaxed about the base than most of this category, and it explains why. The saunas sit on three cradles that are 4 feet long and 4 inches wide, which spreads load over a much larger footprint than a conventional barrel cradle, and Nootka says a sauna "can be assembled on nearly any level surface" including crushed stone, river rock, gravel, wood decking, flagstones "or even grass" - with pavers or flagstones under the feet on grass or organic ground to stop them settling. That is a materially easier requirement than the brands that forbid grass outright, and it follows from the cradle design rather than being a corner cut. It asks for a 12 to 18 inch buffer around the perimeter for setup and maintenance. Our foundation guide covers the options and when a pad is still the right answer.

Maintenance is light and honestly stated: a seasonal check of the banding, which Nootka says may need annual or seasonal tightening in the first year or two, sanding and optional re-staining every few years, and ash removal and glass cleaning on the wood stove. Barrel bands loosening as cedar seasons is normal rather than a defect, and a brand that tells you so up front is doing you a favor.

What Nootka does not publish

  • Exterior dimensions. This is the real gap. Nothing on the pages we read gives a diameter, height or footprint for either barrel beyond the 8 foot and 10 foot length in the model name - and you cannot plan a site, a gate or a delivery path without it.
  • Weight, crated or assembled, which matters for both the delivery route and the ground.
  • Wood thickness. The cedar is described as locally milled, select tight knot and kiln dried, which is more than many brands say about grade - but not how thick the staves are.
  • Insulation, and whether the roof assembly adds any beyond the metal option.
  • Wire gauge for the 50 A and 40 A circuits, and any published safety listing for Nootka's own heater.
  • Cube model specifications. Referenced on the site, not specified on the pages we read.
  • Running costs. No kWh or per-session figures - see is an outdoor sauna worth it for how to estimate them from the heater rating.

We also found no CPSC recall for Nootka Saunas. For context on the price band: the two barrels start in the mid-to-high four figures before any options, and a fully optioned 10 foot with a roof, glass door, window and heater lands in the low five figures - which puts Nootka above the imported kits and roughly level with the established North American direct-sales makers. The configurator prices every option separately, so the number you first see is a floor rather than a quote.

Alternatives you can buy today

If you want a cedar barrel through a normal retail channel now, the picks below are in the class. They are not Nootka products, none is milled in British Columbia, and none comes with a trained builder - that is what you give up. What you get back is a return path, a published price with no configurator, and in most cases a lower one. The first pick is the exception and the most useful item here: it is the same Harvia M3 stove Nootka fits as its wood-fired upgrade, sold on its own.

Western red cedar specifically, not 'cedar' as a marketing word. The species matters for how a barrel handles a wet-dry-freeze cycle.

WoodCanadian western red cedar
Heater6 kW, wet or dry
TypeTraditional barrel

What works

  • Names the actual species rather than the generic word 'cedar'
  • A wet-or-dry heater covers both use patterns
  • Wide stated capacity range

What doesn't

  • A '2–6 person' range is marketing, not a spec
  • Roof covering unpublished — the first thing to fail on a barrel

Skip it ifyou want a named heater brand. An unbranded 6 kW element works until it does not, and then you are hunting for a replacement that fits the same opening.

Our honest position

Nootka does several things we wish this whole category would copy. It tells you that a wood stove costs you seats. It tells you why its electric ceiling is 194 °F instead of implying a rival's 230 °F is better engineering. Its warranty is tiered and readable and does not contradict its own marketing. It will send someone to build the thing. Against that: it does not publish the dimensions of its own product, which is a strange omission at this price; its heater is proprietary, with no independent spec sheet and no published certification we could find; the cancellation fees escalate within days; and a US buyer's contract sits under British Columbia law. We would shortlist it, and before paying we would get the exterior dimensions and crated weight in writing, confirm professional assembly covers the address, ask what certification the Nootka heater carries and how parts are supplied, and settle every option inside the first week. If a flat-pack and a weekend suit you better, the alternatives above reach the same heat - and barrel vs cabin is the shape question to settle first.

Questions people actually ask

Where are Nootka saunas made?
In Squamish, British Columbia, from locally milled Western Red Cedar described as select tight knot and kiln dried. Nootka says US orders ship domestically from its US facility, so the manufacturing is Canadian and the fulfillment is local.
How hot does a Nootka sauna get, and how fast?
Nootka publishes a maximum of 90 °C, or 194 °F, on electric models and states the reason - CSA governs the maximum temperature for electric sauna heaters to 90 °C. It publishes 10 to 15 minutes to reach that on electric and 30 to 45 minutes on wood, and says a metal roof speeds heating by about 20 percent. It does not state where that temperature is measured, so treat it as time to a usable room rather than to a fully saturated stone mass.
What electrical supply does a Nootka sauna need?
A 240 V hardwired connection to your panel, installed by a certified electrician. The standard 9 kW heater uses a 50 A non-GFI breaker and the optional 7.5 kW uses a 40 A non-GFI breaker. Nootka does not publish a wire gauge, so have your electrician size the conductors.
How many people does a Nootka sauna seat?
It depends on the heater, and Nootka is unusually clear about this. With an electric heater, up to 4 in the 8 ft barrel and up to 8 in the 10 ft. With the wood-burning stove, up to 2 in the 8 ft and up to 6 in the 10 ft, because the stove takes interior space. Note that Nootka's 10 ft product page says 6+ people where its FAQ says up to 8.
What warranty do Nootka saunas have?
A tiered five-year warranty: year one covers any sauna component, heater, controller or LED light with parts and shipping; year two is parts only with the customer paying shipping; years three to five cover the structure only, meaning penetrative rot, defect-related glass breakage and roof rust. The Harvia stove and accessories get one year. Labor is never covered, coverage is non-transferable, and it is voided entirely by uncertified electrical work or by commercial use of a residential unit.
Can you buy a Nootka sauna on Amazon?
No. We searched and found no Nootka-branded listing - the results are other cedar barrel brands. Nootka sells direct from its own site with a configurator, built to order on a four to five week lead time. The Harvia M3 stove it fits as the wood-fired option is sold separately on Amazon.
