DIY cold plunge guide
Stock tanks work. Chest freezers are the popular idea we will not walk you through. Here is what a DIY build genuinely saves, and where it does not.

DIY cold plunge builds are popular because the commercial products look expensive relative to what they are: a container of cold water. Sometimes that instinct is right. Sometimes the build costs as much as buying and works worse. This page is about which is which.
The stock tank build: the one that works
A galvanized or poly livestock stock tank is a container built to hold hundreds of gallons of water outdoors for years. It is cheap, tough, and available at any farm supply store. As a cold plunge vessel it works genuinely well.
What it does not have is insulation, and that is the whole build:
- 1Choose the size carefully. Stock tanks come large. Every extra gallon is more ice or more chiller — see the sizing arithmetic. Smaller than you think.
- 2Insulate the outside. Rigid foam board around the sides and underneath, taped and sealed. This is the step that turns a stock tank from a heat sink into a usable plunge, and it is the difference between a chiller coping and not.
- 3Insulate underneath especially. Ground contact is a large, continuous heat path that people forget because they cannot see it.
- 4Build a lid. Insulated board with a handle. The open water surface is the biggest heat path of all, and this is the highest-value component in the build.
- 5Add a drain fitting if the tank does not have one. Emptying a full tank by bucket gets old immediately.
- 6Sit it on a level, drained base. Same requirement as any tub, and the condensation puddle is real.
Add a chiller and a filter loop and you have a functioning setup for meaningfully less than a purpose-built tub — with the caveat that it will look like a livestock tank wrapped in foam, because that is what it is.
The chest freezer build: why we will not walk you through it
If the appeal is cost, a stock tank plus a purpose-built chiller — a device engineered to cool water that a person is going to get into — reaches the same result without that risk. That is the honest alternative and it is not much more expensive.

The pattern: DIY saves real money on the container and the insulation, and saves nothing on the mechanical components — because those are the same parts whichever route you take. The chiller is the one place to buy rather than build.
When to just buy the tub
- It lives somewhere visible. A foam-wrapped stock tank on a patio is a permanent aesthetic decision.
- You want it to be simple. A purpose-built insulated tub arrives insulated, with a lid, ready.
- You are not confident with the build. Poorly sealed insulation traps water against the tank and does not insulate well either.
- You want to move it. A wrapped and sealed stock tank is not going anywhere.
Testing the habit before building anything
Worth saying plainly: the cheapest DIY cold plunge is the bath you already own plus bagged ice. It costs nothing, works today, and tells you within a month whether you will keep doing this.
People who build before establishing the habit end up with a foam-wrapped stock tank in the garden that nobody uses. Ice first, build second, chiller third — that order costs less overall and produces fewer regrets.
