Cold plunge upgrades: what is worth fixing
Most complaints about a cold plunge setup are fixable for very little. A couple are not. Here is which is which, in the order that gives you the most back.

Before replacing anything, work out whether the thing annoying you is fixable. In this category most complaints are, and the fixes are cheap — the exception is a chiller genuinely undersized for the tub, which is not fixable at any price.

1. The lid (do this first, always)
If your setup has one problem, this is almost certainly the fix. The open water surface is the largest heat path in any cold plunge — larger than the walls, larger than the base — because water in contact with warmer air, evaporating, is an extremely effective heat exchanger.
A fitted insulated lid closes most of that. On a chiller it means dramatically less cycling and a lower electricity bill. On ice it means ice that survives to the next session. It also keeps leaves, insects and dust out, so your filter cartridge lasts longer.
It is the cheapest capacity upgrade available, and people skip it because it is not exciting.
2. Get it out of the sun
Free, and larger than most equipment upgrades. Direct sun on a tub is a substantial and continuous heat load that the chiller fights all afternoon. Move the tub, or shade it. If neither is possible, a reflective cover during the day helps considerably.
3. Add the venturi you are missing
If you run an ozone generator and the water still goes off, the likely explanation is that the ozone is not dissolving. Bubbled into standing water, most of it rises and escapes into the air. A venturi injector in a line with flow draws it in under pressure so it actually reaches the water.
It is an inexpensive PVC fitting and it is the difference between an ozone system that works and one that hums. The one condition is a circulation loop — a drop-in chiller has none, so if that is your setup, ozone is not the right route. Full explanation in the filtration guide.
4. Filtration, if you only sanitize (or vice versa)
The most common water-care mistake is doing one job and assuming it covers the other. A filter removes what you can see; ozone deals with biology. If your water is clear but the walls feel slippery, that is biofilm and you have filtration without sanitation. If it is sanitized but full of debris, it is the reverse.
Both are cheap. A standard 10-inch housing with a 50 micron cartridge, and an ozone generator with a venturi, covers it.
5. Insulated hoses, or no hoses at all
Uninsulated hoses lose cold between the tub and the chiller, sweat condensation everywhere, and in a cold climate they freeze. Insulated hoses are inexpensive and solve all three.
If hoses are your recurring irritation — clamps, leaks, freezing — a drop-in chiller removes them entirely. There is nothing to plumb, which means nothing to leak. You give up filtration and some tub space in exchange.

The cheap things that improve every session
- A floating thermometer. Guessing at temperature makes any protocol meaningless.
- A groundsheet. Cold tubs sweat and ruin whatever they sit on.
- A step or a mat. Getting in and out of a tall barrel wet is where people slip.
- A timer you can see. So the session is a decision rather than an endurance contest.
- A towel and dry layers within reach, which sounds obvious and is the thing people forget in the cold.
