The best sauna gifts

People who own a sauna have usually bought the obvious things already. The gifts that land are the ones used every session that the owner would not quite get round to buying: a better robe, a proper hat, a bucket that is not plastic, fresh stones. Most of them depend on one fact about the sauna.

Find out first: traditional or infrared?

Half the classic sauna gifts only make sense in a traditional sauna. A bucket, a ladle and stones are for throwing water on a heater; in an infrared cabin they are decoration. A wool hat protects your head from 175–195 °F air, which an infrared cabin never reaches. If you do not know which they have, the robe, the speaker and the accessory kit suit either.

Stones: the gift that needs a question

Stones break down and need replacing, which makes them a genuinely useful gift — but only if you know the heater. Speakers: keep them low

Where premium sits

Sauna makers sell their own accessories. Sun Home lists a traditional bucket and ladle, a sauna care set and a bamboo insert for its blanket, and Almost Heaven's red cedar accessory kit above is made in West Virginia by a sauna maker. Matching the brand of the sauna is a nice touch, not a necessity.

What we would not give

Anything that goes on the heater without the owner's say-so — scents, oils or "sauna stones" of unknown type. Heater manuals are specific about what goes on the stones, and infrared cabins are meant to stay dry.
