The best sauna cleaners and wood oils

The routine is two steps and nothing more. Clean the wood with something that lifts sweat and body oils without stripping it, let it dry, then — once or twice a year — treat it with paraffin oil so it stops drying out and cracking from repeated heat cycles. Almost Heaven's own listing describes exactly this pairing, and recommends treating new benches before first use.

Concentrate or ready to use?

This is the only real decision on the cleaning side. The Northwood quart is a concentrate — one to two capfuls in a bucket of warm water, making up to ten times its volume — which is far cheaper per wipe-down and the obvious answer if you clean weekly or run more than one cabin. The Mission Control and Sven sprays are ready to use: no mixing, no bucket, spray onto a cloth and wipe. For a household sauna used a few times a week, the spray is the one that actually gets used, and a cleaning product you skip is worth nothing. Both approaches are bleach-free, which is the specification that matters.

How to apply the oil

1. 1Let the sauna cool completely. Every one of these says so, and hot wood will flash off a solvent-free oil before it soaks in.
2. 2Clean first, and let it dry. Oil over sweat residue seals the residue in. This is why the two products are a pair rather than alternatives.
3. 3Apply a thin, even layer with a cloth, sponge or soft brush. Thin is the operative word — these penetrate rather than coat.
4. 4Wait, then wipe off the excess. Northwood's instruction is apply, wait, wipe. Anything left sitting on the surface will feel tacky.
5. 5Benches, backrests and headrests first. Those are the surfaces that take sweat directly. Walls matter far less.
6. 6Once or twice a year, per Almost Heaven's guidance — and on new benches before first use.

What not to oil

• The heater, the stones and anything electrical. Mission Control's listing says it explicitly and it applies to every product here.
• The floor, if it is a duckboard you walk on wet. Oil plus water is slippery. See best sauna floor mats.

The smell test

The reason to care about formulation is that you are going to breathe it. A sauna is a small, sealed, very hot room, and anything volatile on the timber will come off the moment the heater fires. That is why every credible product in this category is clear, odorless and solvent-free — Sauna Shield describes pharmaceutical-grade paraffin with no solvents, impurities, fragrances or additives, and Northwood describes clear, odorless pure mineral oil. Where premium sits

Two of the six products here come from sauna builders rather than chemical companies: Almost Heaven, which has made saunas in West Virginia for decades and is part of Harvia, and Northwood Sauna, whose oil and cleaner are formulated as a pair. That is the useful signal in a category full of relabelled generic mineral oil — a company that also sells the benches has a reason to care what goes on them. The one we would skip

Boiled linseed oil. It comes up in every search for sauna wood treatment, it is cheap, and it is the wrong product: a drying oil that cures into a surface film, exactly what an interior sauna surface must not have. It is fine on garden furniture and a hand tool handle. Keep it out of a hot cabin, and be careful with the rags whatever you use it on.
