How to clean a sauna

The short version: sit on a towel, wipe the benches down after each session, leave the door open until the room is dry, and use a cleaner made for bare sauna wood when it needs more than water. The single biggest thing you can do for a sauna's lifespan costs nothing — letting it dry properly between sessions. Everything else is occasional.

Why sauna wood is different

Sauna interiors are deliberately unfinished. There is no varnish, no lacquer and no film for a cleaner to sit on, because a film-forming finish would get hot, soften and trap moisture. That makes the wood absorbent: sweat, body oils and anything you spray soak in rather than sitting on the surface. It also makes the standard advice from every manufacturer we have read the same — clean with water and a cloth first, and reach for chemistry only when water is not enough. One brand's care guidance goes further and specifies a light sand with 220-grit paper for sweat stains, and no chemicals at all inside, including on the glass.

The routine

What to use, and what to keep out

• Use: a cleaner formulated for sauna wood, either a ready-to-use spray or a concentrate diluted in a bucket. Both exist, and the concentrate is cheaper per clean if you actually mix it.
• Use: plain water and a cloth for routine wiping. It is what most manufacturers specify first.
• Use: fine abrasive paper, sparingly, on stained bench tops. This is the manufacturer-sanctioned fix, not a last resort.
• Avoid: bleach and household bathroom sprays. They leave residue in absorbent wood that you will smell at 190 °F.
• Avoid: varnish, polyurethane or deck stain inside. A film finish in a sauna is a mistake that is hard to undo.
• Avoid: pressure washers on interior wood, and soaking the floor of an indoor room that has no drain.
• Careful with: paraffin-based sauna oil. It is the traditional treatment for benches and it soaks in rather than forming a film — check your maker's guidance, because not all of them want it used.

The heater and the stones

Stones are consumable. Repeated heating and quenching fractures them over time, and broken stones pack tighter, which restricts airflow through the heater and makes it work harder. Once a year, take them out, discard anything cracked or crumbling, and restack loosely so air can move. While the basket is empty, look at the elements for scale and at the casing for corrosion. Floors, drains and the parts that smell first

If a sauna develops an odor, it is almost always the floor or the underside of the benches rather than the walls. Duckboards and floor mats are there to be removed and cleaned — lift them, clean underneath, and let both dry completely. An indoor room built to specification has a hard, waterproof floor precisely so this is possible; a room built over carpet or porous board has a problem no cleaner fixes. Outdoor rooms have one extra job

The exterior. Manufacturers who publish outdoor care guidance ask for annual sealing on outdoor models, and one recommends protecting exterior wood with beeswax while avoiding treatments containing benzene or a high concentration of alcohol. That is a once-a-year afternoon that decides whether a cedar barrel looks good in year five. Infrared cabins and portable saunas

• Infrared cabins are still bare wood inside — same rules. Wipe the bench, dry the room, and keep liquid away from the panels and the control head.

• Steam tents are fabric and plastic: wipe them out, then dry them fully open before folding, because a damp folded tent is how they start to smell.

The habit that does the most

Leave the door open when you finish.
