The best sauna blanket accessories

Every infrared sauna blanket sold has the same interior: waterproof PU or PVC, wipe clean, non-absorbent. That is the correct material for the job — it has to survive being soaked and it has to be cleanable — and it is also unpleasant to lie against and impossible to properly wash.

So an insert is not really an accessory. It is the part that makes the blanket usable, and most owners work this out after their first session rather than before. This page is the buying decision nobody tells you about at the point you buy the blanket.

Two products that solve different problems

The category splits cleanly, and the split matters more than any individual product here.

A towel insert is a reusable fabric sack you lie inside. It absorbs sweat, it is far more pleasant against skin than plastic, and it goes in the wash afterwards. It is the right answer for one person using a blanket regularly.

A disposable liner is a single-use sheet — plastic or foil — that keeps sweat off the blanket entirely rather than absorbing it. Nothing to wash, a fresh one per session, and an ongoing cost. It is the right answer when more than one person uses the same blanket, and the wrong answer for a household of one.

How we picked

1. 1Published dimensions in inches. This is the whole ball game. An insert narrower than your blanket's interior leaves the sides exposed, which is exactly where sweat pools.
2. 2Named fabric with a ratio where possible. "Premium soft fabric" tells you nothing. "65% rayon from bamboo, 35% organic cotton" tells you how it will feel and how long it will take to dry.
3. 3Washability. Machine washable cold is what keeps an insert in rotation. Anything more demanding gets abandoned.
4. 4Quantity in the pack. A single insert has a structural problem — it is in the wash exactly when you want the blanket. Two-packs solve it.
5. 5Drying speed. Underrated and genuinely important on a garment that ends every session soaked through.

Fabrics, and what each is actually like

There are four in this survey and they behave differently enough to matter.

Cotton waffle is the traditional answer and a good one. The waffle structure holds more sweat per unit weight than flat cotton, it is pleasant against skin, and pure cotton dries faster than a rayon blend. Against it: it creases, and it needs shaking out before each use.

Rayon-cotton blends, usually described as bamboo, are the softest option here and the slowest to dry despite what the listings say about quick drying. If comfort is the priority and you are not turning the blanket around daily, this is the nicest thing to lie in.

Microfiber dries fastest by a clear margin, which on a garment soaked every session is worth a lot. It also feels synthetic against bare skin and holds odor more readily over time than cotton does. A reasonable trade if turnaround matters more to you than feel.

Foil and plastic are not fabrics and are not trying to be. They keep sweat off the blanket rather than absorbing it, which is a different job — protection rather than comfort. Nobody finds a foil wrap pleasant, and that is not what it is for.

The running-cost arithmetic

We do not write prices into our comparisons, so here is the shape of the comparison instead, which is the part that actually decides it.

A reusable insert is bought once and washed indefinitely. A ten-pack of foil wraps is ten sessions — at three sessions a week that is under a month. Even a 150-piece box of disposable liners is roughly a year at that rate, and the reusable option will still be cheaper across it while being considerably more pleasant to use.

That arithmetic reverses completely as soon as more than one person is involved, because a shared reusable insert is a hygiene problem that no amount of washing fully solves between users, and per-person inserts stop being cheaper than liners at around three or four regular users. If you are running a blanket commercially, the disposables are the right call and it is not close.

The one we would skip

It is genuinely the right product for a studio and we have recommended it as such. But 150 single-use plastic sheets is well beyond what one household will ever get through, the material is markedly less comfortable than any fabric insert, and the waste is real. If your blanket has one regular user, buy two cotton inserts and never think about this category again.
