The best sauna vents

A sauna with no adjustable intake is a sauna you cannot tune. The vents are the cheapest part of a cabin and the one most often replaced with whatever fits.

By Sawyer V.Last updated
Yulatik Cedar Sauna Air Vent, Adjustable Sliding Grille, 13.4 x 5.1 in

The verdict: measure the existing cut-out first, then buy the Yulatik cedar sliding vent if it is rectangular — 13.4 × 5.1 in is the size almost every imported cabin is cut for, and it is the only one here with a sliding shutter and a wooden handle you can move at 180 °F. If your cabin is a barrel with a drilled round penetration, buy the Vindar round cedar vent instead: it rotates, and it publishes inner, outer and wood diameter plus thickness, which no other vent on this page does. The fixed grilles are for the high outlet, which wants to stay open anyway.

Measure the cut-out before anything else

This is a replacement-parts category, and the single reason people buy twice is ordering a shape that does not match the hole. Two sizes dominate: 13.4 × 5.1 in on imported prefabricated cabins and barrel kits, and a round penetration of roughly 3.5 to 4 in drilled through a barrel stave. A rectangular grille over a round hole looks exactly as bad as it sounds, and a 5 × 11.5 in grille will not cover a 13.4 × 5.1 in opening in either direction. Measure the opening, not the old vent's outer frame, and note the wall thickness too — one vent here publishes its own thickness and the rest do not.

Who each pick is for

  • Yulatik sliding cedar vent — the standard rectangular replacement. Buy it if your cut-out is 13.4 × 5.1 in and you adjust the intake between warm-up and session. Skip it if the penetration is round.
  • Vindar round cedar vent — barrels and any drilled hole. Buy it for a barrel exhaust; it rotates and it is the only vent here that tells you every dimension including thickness. Skip it if your cabin has rectangular openings.
  • HERCHR cedar panel — the cheap adjustable. Buy it if you want adjustment at the lowest price and a published 0.4 in thickness for a shallow wall. Skip it if you will be moving it during sessions: no handle is stated.
  • The Sauna Place cedar grill — the high outlet. Buy it as a named Western red cedar grille from a real US sauna supplier, for the outlet that stays open. Skip it for the lower intake, which is the one you want to throttle.
  • SUPVOX blind vent — a DIY build only. Buy it if you are cutting the opening yourself and want the cheapest louvered cover. Skip it as a replacement: with no published size, you are buying a surprise.

Where the two vents go, and why

A traditional sauna wants air in low and near the heater, and out high on the opposite side — cool air drawn in under or beside the stove, heated, and pulled across the room before it leaves. That geometry is why the intake is the vent worth making adjustable: closing it down speeds warm-up and opening it during a session keeps the air breathable without dropping the bench temperature. The outlet is about moving stale air and drying the cabin afterwards, and a fixed grille does that perfectly well. An infrared cabin is a different problem — there is no convective loop to manage, and its vents are mostly about clearing humidity after a session. Our outdoor sauna winter maintenance page covers leaving the vents open to dry a cabin out, which is the single biggest thing vents do for the life of the wood.

Top pick · A sliding shutter you can actually set mid-session

Yulatik Cedar Sauna Air Vent, Adjustable Sliding Grille, 13.4 x 5.1 in

Yulatik

$31.99 · View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 7, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.

A real sliding shutter with a handle sized for a hot hand, in the 13.4 by 5.1 inch opening most prefabricated cabins are cut for. The adjustment is the point: a fixed grille is a hole you cannot close.

Published specifications
Dimensions13.4 x 5.1 in (34.1 x 12.9 cm)
WoodCedar
AdjustmentSliding shutter with wooden handle
FinishPolished edges, stated free of splinters and burrs
InstallationConstruction adhesive or finishing nails, not included
PositionInlet or outlet
Free area when openNot published
ThicknessNot published in this listing

What works

  • A handle you can move at 180 degrees F without burning your fingers
  • The 13.4 by 5.1 inch size matches the vent cut-outs on most imported cabins
  • Cedar, so it will not weep resin onto the wall below it

What doesn't

  • Does not publish free open area, so airflow cannot be calculated
  • Adhesive or nails are your problem; nothing is in the box
  • No thickness figure, which matters if the wall cavity is shallow

Skip it ifyour cabin has a round vent penetration. A rectangular grille over a round hole looks exactly as bad as it sounds.

#2 · Barrel saunas and any round penetration

Vindar Round Red Cedar Sauna Vent, 3.74 in Opening, Rotating

Vindar

$22.99 · View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 7, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.

The one here with a round body and a rotating adjustment, which is what a barrel sauna's drilled vent actually needs. It also publishes every dimension, including thickness, which nothing else does.

Published specifications
Inner diameter3.74 in
Outer diameter5.12 in
Wood diameter5.71 in
Thickness0.78 in
WoodCanadian red cedar, single piece, no resin, stain or sealer
AdjustmentRotating, to vary airflow
MountingWall or ceiling; 3 screws and instructions included
Free area when openNot published

What works

  • Publishes inner, outer, wood diameter and thickness, which is the full fit picture
  • Round, rotating and designed for barrel exhaust, where rectangular grilles do not belong
  • Screws and instructions in the box

What doesn't

  • 3.74 inches of opening is modest for an exhaust on a larger cabin
  • Single piece of cedar can check over time with repeated heat cycling
  • No free-area figure, so you cannot size it against cabin volume

Skip it ifyour cabin was built with rectangular vent cut-outs. Cutting a round hole to suit a vent is the wrong way round.

#3 · The cheapest adjustable panel that publishes its thickness

HERCHR Cedar Sauna Vent Panel, Adjustable, 13.4 x 5.1 x 0.4 in

HERCHR

$18.43 · View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 7, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.

Same 13.4 by 5.1 inch footprint as the sliding cedar vent, with a published 0.4 inch thickness and an adjustable gap, for about half the money. The adjustment mechanism is less substantial, and it is the part that gets used.

Published specifications
Dimensions13.4 x 5.1 x 0.4 in (34.1 x 12.9 x 1.1 cm)
WoodCedar
AdjustmentAdjustable air gap mechanism
Thickness0.4 in
InstallationDirect replacement on sidewalls or ceilings, minimal tools
FinishSanded and polished edges
HandleNo dedicated handle stated
Free area when openNot published

What works

  • Publishes thickness, so you know it will sit flush in a shallow cavity
  • Adjustable at roughly half the price of the sliding cedar vent
  • Drops straight into the common imported cut-out size

What doesn't

  • No handle stated, which matters when the panel is at cabin temperature
  • Listing text is keyword-stuffed, which usually tracks with the build
  • No free-area figure

Skip it ifyou will be adjusting it during sessions. Pay the difference for the one with a wooden handle.

#4 · A US sauna supplier rather than a marketplace brand

The Sauna Place Cedar Sauna Air Vent Grill, 5 x 11.5 in

The Sauna Place

$43.99 · View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 7, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.

Western red cedar from a named US sauna supplier, in a slightly different size to the imported 13.4 by 5.1 inch standard. A fixed grille, so plan it for the outlet where you want air always moving.

Published specifications
Dimensions5 x 11.5 in
WoodWestern red cedar
AdjustmentFixed grille, not adjustable
SupplierThe Sauna Place, a named US sauna retailer
InstallationStated as hassle-free; fixings not specified
Free area when openNot published
ThicknessNot published
Mounting orientationNot specified

What works

  • Western red cedar named specifically, not just 'cedar'
  • From a sauna supplier with a real catalog behind it
  • A sensible choice for the high outlet, which wants to stay open anyway

What doesn't

  • Fixed, so it cannot be closed to hold heat during warm-up
  • The 5 by 11.5 inch size will not drop into a 13.4 by 5.1 inch cut-out
  • Dearest of the group while adjusting nothing

Skip it ifthis is your lower intake vent. The intake is the one you want to throttle, and a fixed grille cannot.

#5 · The cheapest way to cover an intake penetration

SUPVOX Wooden Sauna Blind Vent

SUPVOX

$20.29 · View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 7, 2026. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. How this is funded.

A louvered wooden blind at the bottom of the category, and the listing publishes neither a size nor a species. Fine as a cover on a DIY intake you cut yourself; impossible to order as a replacement.

Published specifications
FormatLouvered blind vent
WoodDescribed only as natural wood
DimensionsNot published in the listing
ThicknessNot published
AdjustmentLouvers; no adjustment mechanism stated
InstallationStated as easy; fixings not specified
Free area when openNot published
Intended positionFresh air intake, per the listing

What works

  • Cheapest in the group
  • Louvered face sheds splash better than an open grille
  • Adequate for a DIY build where you are cutting the opening to suit

What doesn't

  • No dimensions at all, so it cannot be bought as a replacement for a known cut-out
  • No wood species, which in a hot cabin decides resin and stability
  • No stated adjustment

Skip it ifyou are replacing a vent in an existing cabin. With no published size, you are buying a surprise.

What nobody publishes

  • Free open area. Not one listing here states the open area in square inches, so none of them can be sized against cabin volume or heater output. Expect to go by the opening you already have.
  • Wall thickness compatibility. Only two vents publish their own thickness, and no listing states the wall depth it suits.
  • Fixings, in most cases. One vent includes three screws. The rest expect adhesive or finishing nails you supply.
  • Wood species, in one case. "Natural wood" is not a species, and in a hot cabin the species decides resin and stability.

Cedar, and why it is not negotiable here

A vent sits in the hottest, wettest air path in the cabin and gets handled with bare hands. Cedar is low-resin, dimensionally stable across heat cycles and stays cool to the touch, which is why four of these five name it. The fifth describes itself only as wood, and that is the reason it sits last. The same logic runs through the rest of the fit-out — see cedar vs hemlock vs spruce for how the species actually differ, and best sauna cleaners and wood oils for keeping any of it right.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a standard sauna vent?
There is no standard, but two sizes dominate: 13.4 × 5.1 in rectangular openings on imported prefabricated cabins and barrel kits, and a drilled round penetration of roughly 3.5 to 4 in through a barrel stave. Measure the opening rather than the old vent's outer frame.
Does a sauna need an adjustable vent?
The lower intake benefits from being adjustable: closed down it speeds warm-up, open during a session it keeps the air breathable without dropping bench temperature. The high outlet works fine as a fixed grille.
Where do sauna vents go?
In a traditional sauna, air in low near the heater and out high on the opposite wall, so the convective loop crosses the room. An infrared cabin has no loop to manage, and its venting is mostly about clearing humidity after a session.
Should you leave sauna vents open?
After a session, yes. An open vent dries the cabin out, which does more for the life of the wood than anything you put on it. Closed vents and damp timber is how a cabin starts to smell.
Can you use a regular wall vent in a sauna?
A metal register gets hot enough to burn a hand and a painted one will off-gas. Cedar is low-resin, stable across heat cycles and safe to touch, which is why every vent sold for this purpose is wood.
