The best sauna benches

The short version: a bought bench is for three situations — a barrel or kit sauna whose seating is too low, a converted room where you are not building joinery, or a portable steam tent that came with nothing to sit on. For a built room, benches are carpentry rather than a purchase, and the geometry matters more than the wood: the top bench wants to sit within about 100 to 120 cm of the ceiling, the foot bench about 45 cm below it, and the foot bench must be higher than the top of the stove or löyly passes underneath you. That is the whole design brief, and no Amazon listing mentions any of it.

What listings publish, and what they hide

The two height rules

Heat stratifies, and löyly rises. Published Finnish guidance puts the top bench within about 120 cm of the highest point of the ceiling, with 100 to 120 cm the usable band, a top bench depth of at least 60 cm, and the foot bench about 45 cm below the seat. The rule with a name is the law of löyly: the foot bench should sit higher than the top of the sauna stove — the source we cite recommends 10 to 20 cm higher still. Put a low freestanding bench into a room with a floor-standing heater and you have seated yourself below the steam, which is the most common reason a new sauna feels weak. Wood, and why cedar keeps winning

A bench is the one surface you are in contact with for the whole session, so its thermal behavior matters more than the walls'. Western red cedar is soft, low density and dry-rot resistant, which is why it is the default; aspen and abachi are the Nordic alternatives and are used for the same reason. What you want to avoid is anything dense and oily, anything with exposed metal fixings at skin height, and anything finished with a film-forming sealer — bare wood, sanded, is correct in a sauna. When to build instead of buy

If the room is yours and permanent, build. Bench framing is simple, the material cost is low, and you get the one thing no bought bench can give you: the right height for your ceiling and your stove. Finlandia's published bench detail is a useful template — 2 × 2 tops with 3/8-inch spacing on 2 × 4 facing — and the spacing is not cosmetic, it is how the bench drains and dries. Depth, and whether you can lie down

Seat depth decides posture, and posture decides how long a session is comfortable. The published guidance asks for a top bench at least 60 cm deep — about 24 inches — with a horizontal seat width of the same order, expanding toward 100 cm if you want to lie down; a bed-like configuration wants roughly 190 by 60 cm. Most freestanding benches sold online are 12 to 18 inches deep, which is a step or a lower tier rather than a seat you can settle back into. If you want to lie down in your sauna, that is a carpentry decision made at framing, not a purchase made afterwards.

Fixings, gaps and the things that burn

• No metal at skin height. Screws and brackets in a 190 °F room reach temperatures that will mark you. Use blind cleats, or countersink and plug.
• Leave gaps between slats — the published detail is 2 × 2 tops with about 3/8 inch between them. That is drainage and drying, not styling.
• Do not seal the bench. A film finish traps moisture and softens in heat; bare, sanded wood is correct. Paraffin-based sauna oil soaks in instead of forming a film.
• Check the load path on a freestanding bench. None of these listings publishes a rating, so assume it is furniture-grade and do not stand on the back edge.
• Let it dry. Wipe benches down after a session and leave the door ajar; the wood should be dry before the next use.

A worked example: fixing a barrel sauna

A typical barrel kit gives you two facing benches at a fixed height set by the curve of the staves, with the heater on the floor between them. That layout frequently puts the seats at or below the top of the stove, which is exactly the arrangement the law of löyly warns against — you feel the heat on your shins and very little steam. The fixes, in order of cost: add a step stool so you can sit up on the bench edge with your feet raised; add a second tier along one wall if the diameter allows it; or, if the heater sits low in a well, raise the heater rather than the benches. The cheap upgrade that beats a new bench

If the complaint is comfort rather than height, a backrest costs a fraction of a bench and fixes the actual problem — a vertical wall against your spine at 190 °F. It is the highest-return small purchase in a sauna, and the one most likely to be bought in the wrong size, because it has to match your bench depth.
