The best portable saunas for apartments

Most sauna buying advice quietly assumes you own the building. It talks about dedicated circuits, ventilation, floor drains and where the cabin will live permanently — none of which is available to you if you rent, and several of which would breach your lease if you tried.

So this page starts from the constraints instead of from the products. There are five, and once you apply them the category narrows quickly and helpfully.

The five constraints that actually apply

1. 1Standard outlet only. 110 V, no new circuit, nothing that requires an electrician. That caps you at roughly 1,500 W and rules out every traditional sauna and most cabins above one or two people.
2. 2No permanent fixings. Nothing screwed to a wall, nothing plumbed, nothing that leaves a mark. This rules out steam generators and anything wall-mounted.
3. 3No ventilation work. You cannot cut an extract vent, so anything producing significant humidity has to be managed with a window and an extractor you already have.
4. 4It has to store, or it has to look acceptable. Either it folds away or it lives in the room permanently and you have to be happy looking at it. Both are valid; they lead to different products.
5. 5Weight and delivery. Upstairs, possibly no lift, possibly a narrow stair turn. A 400 lb flat-packed cabin is not an apartment product regardless of its wattage.

Choosing between the three formats

Why a blanket usually wins in a rental

It is not the best sauna experience available and we are not going to pretend otherwise. A cabin is better: you sit upright, the heat surrounds you, and it feels like a room rather than a device.

But in an apartment a blanket wins on almost every constraint that actually binds. It stores on a shelf. It adds no humidity. It weighs 15 to 21 lb, so it comes up the stairs in one trip. It leaves no trace when you move out. It draws less than a kettle. And it works in a studio flat where no cabin of any size would fit.

Two things worth checking in your lease

What you cannot have, and why

It is worth being explicit, because a lot of the sauna internet will suggest otherwise.

A traditional sauna. Even the smallest one-to-two person traditional room needs a 240 V circuit for its heater. That is an electrician, a breaker and almost always your landlord's permission. It is not an apartment product.

A steam shower. A steam generator is plumbed, wired and installed into a sealed enclosure. That is a renovation, and the whole category is covered separately on best steam saunas for home for people who own the bathroom.

Anything above about 1,500 W. A standard 15 A circuit at 110 V will carry roughly 1,400 W continuously with the margin the code expects, and in an older building that circuit is shared with other rooms. Two- and three-person infrared cabins at 2,100 W need a dedicated 20 A circuit, which is once again an electrician and a permission.

The one we would skip

The personal steam sauna — in most apartments, and reluctantly, because it is a well-made unit and it folds flat.

The problem is not the product, it is the room. Steam in a small flat without a mechanical extract puts real moisture into a space that has nowhere to send it, and repeated sessions in an unventilated room is how damp problems start behind furniture. If you have a bathroom with an extractor or a utility room with a window, it is a good buy and we would recommend it. If your only option is a carpeted living room in a sealed modern flat, take the dry-heat route instead — you will get the sauna and keep the deposit.
