The best sauna door handles

The one part of a sauna you touch on every single visit, and the one you cannot make out of metal. Most of this decision is a single measurement, and most listings do not publish it.

By Sawyer V.Last updated
Novabright Curved Cedar Sauna Door Handles, 10.5 in, 2-Pack

The verdict: buy the Novabright curved cedar two-pack. A sauna door needs a handle on the inside and one on the outside, and this is the only pick here that gives you both and publishes the hole spacing — 8 15/16 inches — so you can check it against the door you already have. If your door's holes sit at the shorter 7 7/16 inches, the Sauna Place 9-inch cedar handle is the only pick on this page that fits them, and it is the cheapest and most completely specified thing here. If you are fitting a handle to a thick door, the YIBEICO beech set is the only listing that states a maximum thickness and it ships eight screws to cover it. If your door is glass, none of the wood-screw sets apply and the Rzeloyde bar with its 304 stainless through-connector is the one built for it. The two at the bottom are on this page deliberately, and the section near the end explains what they are doing here.

1
Novabright Curved Cedar Sauna Door Handles, 10.5 in, 2-PackThe only pick here that gives you two handles and tells you the hole spacing, which between them are the two things a replacement buyer actually needs. A sauna door wants a handle on each side, so a pair in one order at this price undercuts every single handle on this page on a per-handle basis, and the published 8 15/16 inch spacing lets you check it against the holes already in your door before you buy.

2
YIBEICO Beech Sauna Door Push-Pull Handle Set, PairThe only listing on this page that publishes a maximum door thickness, and the only one that ships enough hardware to deal with whatever yours turns out to be: eight screws in different lengths, two plugs to cover the holes and a screwdriver. Beech rather than cedar, which is a denser hardwood and a different look.
Thick doors, and the complete fitting kitPair for back-to-back mounting, beech, fits doors to 2.5 in thick, 8 screws plus plugs and a screwdriver
3
NUIBY Solid Finnish Pine Sauna Door Pull Handles, 11.7 in, PairThe longest handle here and the only one that names both its species and its construction: a single machined piece of Finnish pine rather than a glued-up blank. It ships ten screws in different lengths and the plugs to hide them, and the listing makes the one argument for wood that actually holds up - a wooden handle will not discolor the way stainless does.

4
Rzeloyde Glass-Door Beech Handle with 304 Stainless Connector, 16 inA glass door is a different mounting problem: there is no wood to screw into, so the two handles have to clamp to each other through a hole in the glass. This one uses a solid 304 stainless connector with a deep thread for exactly that, and it is the only pick here specified for it. It is also the longest and the dearest.

5
The Sauna Place 9 in Cedar Sauna Door HandleThe cheapest handle on this page and the most completely specified: it publishes all three of its dimensions and its hole spacing, from a seller whose whole catalog is sauna parts. If your door has the shorter 7 7/16 inch hole spacing, this is the pick, and it is the only one here that fits it.

The Sauna Place 9 in Rustic Cedar Sauna Door HandleOn this page as a price comparison the category deserves. It is the same seller, the same wood and the same stated 9 by 1.8 by 1.4 inches as the handle above it, with a contoured rather than a plain profile - and it costs more than twice as much. It also stops short of publishing the hole spacing that its cheaper sibling gives you, and it says outright that you choose the fasteners.

Why a sauna door handle is wood, and why that is not decoration

A bench sits at 175 to 195 degrees F in a traditional room, and the air at the ceiling is hotter still. Metal in that room reaches air temperature and then conducts heat into your hand far faster than wood does, which is why a steel handle on the inside of a sauna door is a burn waiting to happen and why you will not find one on a purpose-built cabin. Wood at the same temperature feels warm rather than painful, because it moves heat into your palm slowly. That is the whole reason this category exists, and it is also why every handle on this page is wood and why none of them publishes a temperature rating — the material choice is doing the work, not a rating.

There is a second argument the listings make that is worth less than it looks. Several of them tell you a wooden handle will not discolor the way stainless does around essential oils or salt air. That is true, and it is also aimed at nail salons and seafront shops rather than saunas. In a sauna the case for wood is thermal first and cosmetic a distant second. Sauna temperature guide covers the ranges a traditional room actually runs at, and best sauna doors covers the door the handle goes on.

The five specs that decide which one fits

  1. 1Hole spacing, if you are replacing. The single most important figure on this page and the one most listings omit. If your door already has two holes drilled, the new handle has to match them or you are drilling fresh holes in a sauna door. Only three listings here state a figure: two at 8 15/16 in, one at 7 7/16 in, and one glass-door bar at 300 mm.
  2. 2One handle or two. A door has two sides. Three of these picks are pairs sold for back-to-back mounting through the door; three are single handles; one does not say clearly. Compare on price per handle, not price, and the ranking changes.
  3. 3Maximum door thickness. A back-to-back handle is bolted through the door, so the screws have to be long enough. Exactly one listing here publishes a figure — 2.5 inches — and two others deal with it by shipping eight or ten screws in assorted lengths and letting you pick.
  4. 4Wood species, where it is named. Cedar on four, beech on two, Finnish pine on one, and one that says only "wood". Cedar is the species a sauna interior is usually built from and the softest of the three; beech is denser and harder-wearing; pine is softer again and marks more easily.
  5. 5Wood door or glass door. These are two different mounting problems. A timber door takes wood screws from each side. A glass door has no wood to bite into, so the two handles have to clamp to one another through a hole in the glass with a metal connector. Only one pick here is built that way.

Hole spacing is the measurement that decides it

If you are replacing a handle rather than building a door, stop reading specifications and go measure. Hole spacing is the distance between the centers of the two screw holes, not the length of the handle, and the two numbers are never the same — a 10.63 inch handle here has 8 15/16 inch spacing, because the grip overhangs its own fixings at each end. Measure center to center on the door, then buy a handle that states the same figure.

This matters more in a sauna than in a house because of what the door is made of. A sauna door is usually a thin insulated panel or a frame of softwood, and the handle is the one thing on it that gets pulled hard several times a session. Holes drilled in the wrong place do not simply look wrong — they take material out of the small amount of frame the fixings have to grip. Our DIY sauna build guide covers the door opening as part of the build; this page is the part that gets you the right fitting afterwards.

Who each pick is for

  • Novabright curved cedar two-pack — the default. Two handles, cedar, a curved grip and a published 8 15/16 inch spacing. Skip it if your existing holes are at 7 7/16 inches, or if you need the screws specified.
  • YIBEICO beech set — a thick door, and nothing left to buy. The only stated maximum door thickness on the page at 2.5 inches, with eight screws, plugs and a screwdriver in the box. Skip it if you are matching existing holes; it publishes no spacing.
  • NUIBY Finnish pine — a named species, in one piece. The longest grip here at 11.7 inches, machined from a single piece, with ten screws and plugs. Skip it on a narrow door, and skip it if you want a harder wood than pine.
  • Rzeloyde glass-door bar — the only one for glass. A 16-inch beech bar on a solid 304 stainless connector, with its hole spacing published in millimeters. Skip it if your door is wood, where it is three times the price of what the job needs.
  • Sauna Place 9-inch cedar — the cheapest, and the most completely specified. All three dimensions and the hole spacing published, from a sauna-parts specialist, and the only pick that fits 7 7/16 inch holes. Skip it if you need both sides, because two of these cost more than the two-pack.
  • Sauna Place 9-inch rustic cedar — the same handle, contoured. A better grip with wet hands than a plain bar. Skip it unless the contour is worth more than double; see the section below.
  • FRCOLOR replacement set — the one to understand rather than buy. Sold for exactly the job this page is about, and missing both figures that job needs. Skip it, and the next section explains why it is still here.

What works

  • Two handles in one order, which is what a door with an inside and an outside needs
  • Publishes its hole spacing, so you can check it against an existing door
  • Cedar and a curved grip, which is the combination the category charges most for

What doesn't

  • Does not itemize its screws, so door thickness is a question to ask
  • No temperature rating published, like everything in this category
  • Curved handles are harder to match to a square-edged door than a straight bar

Skip it ifyour door already has holes at 7 7/16 in. The spacing is not adjustable and redrilling a sauna door is not a repair you want to make twice.

What works

  • The only pick that states a maximum door thickness
  • Ships screws in several lengths plus plugs and a screwdriver, so nothing else to buy
  • Back-to-back mounting pulls the two handles against each other rather than into the wood

What doesn't

  • Does not publish its hole spacing, which is the figure a replacement needs
  • Beech is denser than cedar but not the species sauna interiors are usually built from
  • The listing also sells it for barn and bathroom doors, so it is not a sauna-only design

Skip it ifyou are replacing a handle rather than fitting a new one, and you need the hole spacing to match before you order.

The longest handle here and the only one that names both its species and its construction: a single machined piece of Finnish pine rather than a glued-up blank. It ships ten screws in different lengths and the plugs to hide them, and the listing makes the one argument for wood that actually holds up - a wooden handle will not discolor the way stainless does.

Maximum door thicknessNot published, though screws are supplied for a range
Temperature ratingNot published

What works

  • Names the species and states it is machined from one solid piece
  • The longest grip on this page, which suits a wide or heavy door
  • Ten screws and plugs supplied, so most door thicknesses are covered

What doesn't

  • No hole spacing published, so it is a poor choice for matching existing holes
  • Pine is softer than cedar or beech and will mark more easily
  • The listing's own use cases are mostly not saunas, which tells you where the design came from

Skip it ifyour door is narrow. Nearly 12 inches of handle on a 24-inch sauna door is half the width of the door.

A glass door is a different mounting problem: there is no wood to screw into, so the two handles have to clamp to each other through a hole in the glass. This one uses a solid 304 stainless connector with a deep thread for exactly that, and it is the only pick here specified for it. It is also the longest and the dearest.

Fixings2 x 4 cm screws, 2 x 8 cm screws, 1 hex wrench

What works

  • The only pick specified for a glass door, with a through-connector rather than wood screws
  • 304 stainless in the one part that has to carry the load
  • Publishes both its length and its hole-to-hole spacing in millimeters

What doesn't

  • No glass thickness range published, which is the fit question on a glass door
  • The dearest handle here by a wide margin
  • 16 inches is a lot of bar for a sauna door, and it is sold for shopfronts as much as saunas

Skip it ifyour door is wood. A through-connector designed for glass is more hardware than a timber door needs, and the wood-screw sets above cost a third as much.

  • The only pick on this page with the shorter 7 7/16 in spacing
  • From a sauna-parts specialist rather than a general hardware seller

What doesn't

  • One handle, so a door with two sides is two orders
  • No screws included, so you are choosing fasteners yourself

Here as the counter-example, because it is the listing a replacement buyer is most likely to land on and the least able to help them. It is sold explicitly as a replacement set and it publishes neither a hole spacing nor a wood species - the material is given as \"wood\" and the color as yellow. Its five bullet points are the same two sentences rearranged with keywords appended.

Published specifications
In the packSold as a set; quantity not clearly stated

WoodNot named; described as wood, color yellow
Hole spacingNot published
ScrewsNot stated
Maximum door thicknessNot published
Temperature ratingNot published

What works

  • Sold as a replacement set rather than a single handle
  • Priced between the specialist singles and the branded pairs
  • Two dimension sets given, in inches and centimeters

What doesn't

  • No wood species named, on a product whose entire argument is that it is wood
  • No hole spacing, which makes it a gamble as a replacement
  • The bullet points are keyword padding rather than specification

Skip it ifyou are replacing an existing handle, which is what this listing is sold for. Without a hole spacing figure you cannot tell whether it will line up.

Two things this category does that are worth naming

The first is a price spread on what looks like the same product. The Sauna Place sells a 9-inch cedar sauna door handle and a 9-inch rustic cedar sauna door handle. Both list the same 9 by 1.8 by 1.4 inches, both are cedar, both are single handles from the same seller — and one costs more than twice the other. The difference the listings describe is a contoured rather than a plain profile. That may well be worth something to you with wet hands. It is worth knowing it is the only difference either listing states, and that the cheaper one is the one that publishes its hole spacing.

The second is that the listing aimed hardest at replacement buyers is the least useful to them. The FRCOLOR set is titled as a replacement set, describes itself as a replacement set in four of its five bullets, and publishes neither a hole spacing nor a wood species. Its specification reads "wood" for material and "yellow" for color. Someone searching for a replacement sauna door handle is the exact person who needs a spacing figure, and this is the listing most likely to meet them without one.

  • Count the handles before you compare prices. Three of these are pairs and three are singles. The cheapest single is not the cheapest way to fit a door with two sides.
  • A handle sold for barn doors is not disqualified, but read it twice. Several of these listings sell the same part for sliding barn doors and bathrooms. That is fine for the wood, and it is why the thermal reasoning above is yours to apply rather than the seller's.
  • Nothing here publishes a load rating. A sauna door is light, so this matters less than it would on an exterior door, but it means the fixings and the door frame are doing work nobody has quantified.

Fitting it so it stays tight

  1. 1Measure center to center before you order, and if you are drilling fresh holes, mark both sides from the same reference edge so the inside and outside handles line up.
  2. 2Fit back-to-back where you can. A pair bolted through the door pulls the two handles against each other and against the panel. A handle screwed into one face alone relies entirely on the grip of two screws in softwood, which is the joint that works loose first.
  3. 3Match the screw length to the door, not to the box. The sets here ship eight or ten lengths for exactly this reason. Too short and the thread barely engages; too long and it comes through the other handle.
  4. 4Leave the wood unfinished, or finish it the way the rest of the room is finished. A varnish that is fine on a front door will go sticky in a sauna. Best sauna cleaners and wood oils covers what belongs on wood in heat.
  5. 5Check it at the start of each season. Wood moves through heat and humidity cycles, and a handle is the fitting most likely to need a quarter turn. The rest of the fit-out is in best sauna accessories.

What none of them publishes

  • A temperature rating. Seven for seven. The material is the argument, and no seller backs it with a figure — which is defensible for wood but still a gap.
  • A load rating. Nothing states how hard the handle or its fixings can be pulled.
  • A hole spacing, on four of seven. The figure a replacement buyer needs most is the one most often missing, including from the listing explicitly sold as a replacement.
  • A wood grade or origin, on most. One names Finnish pine, two name beech, four say cedar without saying which cedar. Cedar vs hemlock vs spruce covers why the species name alone is only half an answer.
  • Whether the wood is finished at all. None of these says whether it ships raw, oiled or sealed, which decides what you should and should not put on it.

Questions people actually ask

What kind of handle do you put on a sauna door?
Wood, and effectively always. A metal handle inside a room running at 175 to 195 degrees F reaches air temperature and conducts that heat into your hand far faster than wood does. Every handle sold for saunas is wood for that reason — cedar, beech or pine on the listings here — and on a glass door the only metal is the connector hidden inside the glass.
How do I measure a sauna door handle before replacing it?
Measure the distance between the centers of the two existing screw holes. That is the hole spacing, and it is not the same as the handle's length — a 10.63 inch handle on this page has 8 15/16 inch spacing. Buy a handle that states the same figure. Only three of the seven listings here publish one.
Do I need two sauna door handles?
Yes, if you want one on each side, which is normal on a sauna door you have to pull shut behind you. Three picks here are sold as pairs for back-to-back mounting through the door; three are single handles. Compare price per handle rather than price, because the cheapest single is not the cheapest pair.
Can you put a wooden handle on a glass sauna door?
Yes, but not with wood screws. A glass door needs a handle pair joined by a solid connector that passes through a pre-drilled hole in the glass and clamps the two halves together. One pick here is built that way, with a 304 stainless connector. None of the wood-screw sets can be fitted to glass at all.
What wood is best for a sauna door handle?
All three species here work. Cedar is what most sauna interiors are built from, is the softest of the three and matches the rest of the room. Beech is denser and will take more wear. Finnish pine sits between them and is softer than cedar in practice. The species matters less than the fit: a handle in the wrong wood is an aesthetic problem, and a handle with the wrong hole spacing does not go on.
Should a sauna door handle be sealed or varnished?
Not with an ordinary varnish. Finishes made for front doors can go soft or sticky at sauna temperatures. None of these listings says whether the handle ships raw, oiled or sealed, so treat it as raw and use a product made for sauna wood if you treat it at all.
